Extra-curriculars and super-curricular for MPharm

Hi, I am currently a Year 12 student studying Biology, Chemistry and French A-Level and I achieved 999998777 at GCSE and I want to do Pharmacy. I was wondering what type of extra-curriculars and super-curriculars did current MPharm students do to get into MPharm? Can I please have book recommendations, podcast recommendations etc. As for extra-curriculars, what type of things did people sign up to?

Definitely something working in a health environment. See if you can volunteer for PALS at your local hospital, or in a care home. Show your interviewers that you really care about patients and their care

I'd even ask your local pharmacy if you can do some work experience or volunteer there

Useful if you can get it - if only so that you can decided if you want this as a career - however, many Pharmacies no longer offer work-experience following Covid.

I have offers for two different pharmacy courses (at Strathclyde and Newcastle) for entry this year and I did no extracurriculars related to pharmacy, I don’t know if my personal statement was just really good, but I don’t think they are as essential as work experience for medicine/ vet medicine. If you have time definitely try and get some though

Thank you so much! What did you focus on then to get offers for Pharmacy?

I applied for biomed and pharmacy and I honestly only did a small paragraph about why I want to do it and most of my personal statement was my skills in my extracurriculars like volunteering, Duke of Edinburgh and presenting assemblies and stuff. In my Newcastle interview I made a good answer as to why I want to do the course and my skills and I got the offer.

Essentially I’m not sure what I did specially I just was honest and conveyed my passion for working with the public and in science, changing role of pharmacists, and the wide career options

Hello! I managed to get volunteering at my local Pharmacy, so thank you so much for your help. How long do you think I should volunteer for though? I’m planning to do it once and week for 4 hours but I’m not sure how long is appropriate to do it. 1 month? 3 months? 6 months?
Any help is appreciated!

I would suggest 3 months minimum, preferably longer so you get a really good and clear understanding of what pharmacists do, and so you have plenty to talk about in your ps. It also shows you have interest if you volunteer for a longer period of time. I've been working in a Pharmacy for 3 months now (started after I submitted my ps), and everytime I work is completely different, and I learn more about pharmacists each time! So the longer you volunteer, the better, as you'll get a really good understanding of what they do, which is what universities love!
I only managed to do 3 days of WEX in a pharmacy in year 11, but still managed to talk about it in my ps. All of the pharmacies (over 10 pharmacies) I contacted in year 12 all said no to me, so well done on getting a place!!
I would also recommend reading 'let sleeping pharmacists lie' by Janelle Soong (£5 on amazon), it really helped with my understanding of what Pharmacists do and now I am working in a Pharmacy, it is definitely very accurate for a day to day perspective! I also completed a virtual WEX course on Springpod (Pharmacy careers - North East, North Yorkshire and Cumbria), and even thought it took around 8-10 hours, it talked a lot about careers and views from industry professionals, and you had to do some research on basic drugs (NSAIDs) as well as self-management skills etc, so I had a good understanding of Pharmacy and the roles and skills needed that I could talk about in my ps.
So my super-curriculars included WEX (in a pharmacy), reading the book and the virtual course and that was plenty for me to talk about in my ps. If you have anymore questions please lmk!!! Good luck on your WEX x
