UEA or Sussex?

Hi, I've got offers for both Sussex (media production) and university of east anglia (film and tv production) and I can't decide where to go. I really love Brighton as a place and how vibrant and exciting it is while still have loads of green spaces. I don't know too much about Norwich as a city yet I can't lie, but I really loved the look of the course there.
If anyone is at these unis or doing one of these courses (or similar) please give me your honest review of your experience at the uni and the city.
If anyone is in the same situation and swaying more toward one uni than the other please let me know why. Thank you!!!

Hi there,

I completely understand the dilemma it’s hard to choose between two great unis, especially when you’re weighing up location vs course. It sounds like Brighton’s vibe really appeals to you, and I totally get why. It’s lively, creative, and has a lot of character. That said, don’t underestimate Norwich and UEA, especially if you’re really drawn to the Film and TV Production course UEA is very well regarded in media and film studies, and the teaching and facilities are top-notch.

I’m doing my PhD at UEA and I can say that Norwich is an amazing city to live in, especially for creatives. It’s got loads of green spaces, as you mentioned you like, and it’s also very walkable and friendly. The city is known for its independent arts scene, with indie cinemas like Cinema City, Norwich Arts Centre, and Norfolk & Norwich Festival, which brings a lot of life to the creative community here. It’s also one of the safest cities for students, which is a big plus.

As for the Film and TV Production course at UEA, it’s heavily focused on practical, hands-on learning, and you’ll get access to great facilities, including a TV studio, editing suites, and media labs. UEA is also home to the East Anglian Film Archive, which is a huge resource for students imagine having access to a treasure trove of film history right on campus!

One thing that really stands out at UEA is the student support. There’s a real sense of community here, and I’ve found that staff are genuinely passionate about helping students succeed something that makes a huge difference when you’re in a creative, practical field like film and media.

If you’ve got a gut feeling about the course at UEA, I’d say follow that instinct. The city might surprise you! 😊 But honestly, both options sound great you really can’t go wrong with either. If you’ve got any specific questions about UEA, feel free to ask!

Best,
Daniel

Hi @Colourcollider

I was in the exact position in 2020, come result day and I had been accepted into my top choice of Sussex to study Film and English Literature. It is a lovely university and the city of course is wonderful, however I eventually decided I wanted to be closer to home and discovered UEA through Clearing.

I am in my final year now of studying Film and Television, I am absolutely loving it. I have taken lots of practical modules as well as studies. I have been able to create my own live television show and will be filming live events in our Lower Common Room, this will include the MMA fighting and our own Strictly Come dancing event. It is a super fun course and has lots of flexibility too.

I would recommend coming to an open day and seeing our lovely studio, you can also search UEA Television Studio on facebook and gain a quick insight. We also have out own television society that you can take part in or live wire if you wanted to do radio work.

Norwich itself is just as vibrant and friendly as Brighton, we have lots of independent shops and plenty of night life too. We have a club on site, or there are lots of independent bars too in the city centre. Norwich Art’s centre is another fantastic venue, with lots of shows put on by both Universities - including Burlesque and Cabaret. Epic Studios is also another well known venue, with Taylor Swift nights and DJ sets too. Or if your into something more peaceful there are lots of open spaces to walk around campus, or even visit the beach or the plantation gardens too!

You can also check out our societies and sports clubs here too ! https://www.ueasu.org/opportunities/societies/ Or https://ueasport.co.uk/clubs/

I hope that helps and any other questions feel free to ask!
