how do durham clubs/societies work?
hi! 2025 offer holder here 
i’m confused about how they work here, i see every college has their own societies/clubs - would this mean i’m not able to join any in colleges other than my own?

Hi! Most people would join their own college’s societies, and then join a uni-wide society if their college doesn’t offer a specific thing. Most college societies are more chilled events, and you can always start a society if you want!
I believe you can make a special case by emailing the college if there’s something that isn’t offered uni-wide.

Hello!
It can be confusing with the whole collegiate system as to how the clubs work but in summary there are societies and sports at the university level and at the college level.
Generally, all societies at the university (with the major exceptions of the Durham Student Theatre and the Durham Union Society) are run by the Durham Student Union. Any college member can join these societies and - at least in my experience - there tends to be more societies at the university level than at college level. You can check out the full list of societies here if you have any specific ones you're eyeing! TeamDU is our university level of sports - so if you are a talented sportsperson it's worth checking out their website!
Colleges really vary in which sports and societies they offer. Some colleges like Collingwood tend to have more sports teams than other smaller colleges but if there is any sport or society you would like to start, you can very easily at the college level! These sports and societies are managed by your college JCR so they likely have a list of societies on their website.
