applying for art foundation + degree?

ik i'm late for applying, but i wasn't planning on applying to degree since i'm pretty certain i'd want to do an art foundation year before going to degree, but now i'm worried if I don't get into any I'll be lost. Should I apply to uni via UCAS? I've already filled everything out and written a personal statement, but should I be applying for deferred entry? My only worry is the degree I want to do changing when I'm doing my foundation year.

Hi @mookow

Try not to panic. It can feel like a lot to juggle at this stage in the application process, but it'll work out.

The UCAS deadline is the 29th January, so you still have time to apply if you would like to.

From my own experience, I applied to both uni and my art foundation when I originally applied to uni. At the time I wanted to only apply for my foundation year, but I also applied to unis for another option - kind of like yourself.

Once I'd had all my uni replies and I had a secured acceptance with my foundation year, I actually deferred my favourite uni option for the following September and went on to complete my foundation year. However, during my foundation I changed my mind about my deferred course, so I withdrew from that uni and reapplied through UCAS for new courses and unis that year. And, I also reapplied to unis I had previously rejected and there was no issues with that - in case you're wondering. From that after my foundation, I ended up going to uni the following September.

So in simple terms, it is possible to apply to uni and your desired foundation courses, and change your plans later on.

You can apply to your uni choices like normal and defer the course at a later date - should your chosen uni accept the deferral - or you can withdraw from the offer too.

There is also the option to go through 'Clearing' towards this summer should you change your mind and want to either choose a different course or find a place at uni if you don't end up applying to uni before the deadline.

I hope this helps. 🙂
