when did you know when it was time to drop the 4th a-level ?

im a year 13 currently studying 4 a-levels, really starting to feel the pressure of the 4 now, which i didnt feel to this extent last year. im pretty reluctant to drop 1, as it feels like such a waste of time to considering ive already been doing it for nearly 2 years now. ive already got all my offers [for 3 grades], but my college lets you drop the 4th at any point. im wondering if anyone who ended up dropping their 4th in year 13 could tell me why/how/when did they decide to drop it, so i can get a better idea if i should start considering more seriously if i should go to 3.

ps i should add, im currently working [job wise] 16 hrs /week , but my contract expires on 31st - might be adding to the stress as well !

Hi @checka888

I studied 4 subjects so I know the feeling! But, I did push through and manage to complete all four in the end.

There were a few points across year 12 and 13 where I considered dropping one subject. But I was very much like you, where I felt I had invested so much time to all four already that it seemed a shame to lose one.

I don't know if you feel this, but I had one subject from the very start of year 12 that I found the most difficult and this was the one I considered losing. If you've got one particular subject that isn't going as well as the others, this could be reason enough to drop it. But, I kept going with it and I found by my final few weeks before my exams I had managed to get my grade up for this subject. This was purely from more hard work and I'm quite competitive - even with myself - so I liked the idea that I'd managed to complete and stick with four.

That being said, I had a few friends who did choose to lose a subject - which is also a very valid option. My friend dropped Biology when she realized how much the subject was absorbing all of her time. She was constantly stressing about that one subject that her other three were overshadowed - which is when she knew she needed to drop it. Maybe you feel like this too?

You could consider if your other subjects would benefit from having more time invested into them if you left one subject behind. And it's also worth thinking about whether this stressful feeling will become more intense towards exam season or whether you can try to get things under control before then with all four.

You may also find some stress is relieved when you finish at your job as you'll have some more time, so you could wait until then to see if things ease up.

I would suggest arranging to speak to a teacher or advisor at your school/sixth form to see if they can offer any further advice before you make any decisions. And you could even speak to your individual subject teachers to chat about your progress and if they can offer additional help.

I hope you work things work out. 🙂
