Obtain a national insurance number

i am due to start my course in September 25 . i am the family member of a British National living in EU so according to the SFE regulations i read, i can apply for SFE support and have also been classed as home fee status.
However i do not have a national insurance number which is required to release the payments. Can you help me with what steps i need to take in order to get a NINO. Do i need a student visa and when i arrive in uk and then
apply ?

Hi @Welcome5

According to the Government website, you don't need a NI number to start your student finance application. If you should need a NI number to be paid your student loan, you should be contacted with how to obtain your NI number.

Here's the webpage with the relevant information: https://www.gov.uk/apply-national-insurance-number

Hope this helps. 🙂

Thankyou for your reply , my question is related to after making the application how do i proceed in applying for the National Insurance which is needed to make the payments once approved if i do not currently have a UK address. Does the university address count as i plan to stay in dorm for the first year ?

Hi @Welcome5

Have you been contacted about how you can get your NI number?

The only issue I could see with using your student accommodation address is that this may not stay the same throughout your degree which could possibly cause issues when you're reapplying for student finance again for years 2 and 3.

However, your uni address may be a valid address to use. I would suggest confirming this before you add in your address. You would probably be best getting in touch with student finance and they should be able to help you out.

Emily 🙂

Hi there,

Can you confirm your nationality and status in the UK? How long have you been in the UK for or when are you arriving in the UK?

Normally once applications are approved we would send your details to The Department for Works and Pensions (DWP) to see if you have a national insurance number. If they advise us you don't have one, they will send you a text/email asking you to apply for one through their online service. You will need a UK address on your account for this process to be done.

Thanks,
Claire

Thank you for your reply. Will the university address be considered as a valid UK address on my account for this process to be done ?

I have been approved for financial support for year 24/25 but never received it, since i have taken a gap year (advising my university to send a change of circumstance ) and due to return for AY 25/26 . Since i already have a customer number do i need to reapply all over again , going through all the procedure over again (identity, eligibility etc... ) ?

Hi Welcome5,

If you never attended, your application would need to be cancelled following a non attendance Change of Circumstances from the university.

You would then need to apply as a new student for the 25/26 academic year when the applications open in the spring.

You would need to provide your eligibility evidence just as you had for the previous application you made as you will be considered a new student for student finance purposes.

Thanks, Clare

Regarding the eligibility I comply under the following "rule"

UK nationals and their family members living in the EEA or Switzerland on 31 December 2020 are generally eligible for home fee status, tuition fee and maintenance support from Student Finance England for courses starting on or after 1 August 2021 and before 1 January 2028, if they meet all the following conditions:

they were living in the EEA or Switzerland on 31 December 2020 (or have moved back to the UK immediately after living in the EEA or Switzerland)

they have lived in the EEA, Switzerland, the UK or Gibraltar for at least the last 3 years

they have lived continuously in the EEA, Switzerland, the UK or Gibraltar between 31 December 2020 and the start of the course

UK nationals and their family members living in the EU overseas territories on 31 December 2020 will continue to be eligible for home fee status in England for courses starting before 1 January 2028.

What is the evidence i will need to provide ?
1/My family members ID (as a proof their nationality )
2/ My relationship with the family member (birth certificate etc)
3/ Proof of residence in EEA

Is there more documents which i will need to prepare ?

Hi there,

When you log into your online account what is the current status of your previous application? Can you confirm your nationality and status in the UK? How long have you been in the UK for or when are you arriving in the UK?

Thanks, Drew
