Uni - subjects

In year 13 and I still don’t know what I want to do for uni. I know that I definitely want to go, and I have 3 personal statements written and signed off on but I still can’t decide on what to do. Currently going between BA geography at LSE, BA economics (probably at Lancaster university) and BSc geology with geophysics at Liverpool. Predicted at- A*A*A in Geography, Product design and Physics. Honestly just looking for something that will get me a stable - ish job with alright wages at the moment as I don’t really know what I want to do. I have no problem getting a postgrad degree if I’d need it.

Just wanted some second opinion on the options I’m going for to try and sway me towards something as I have less then a week to decide and sent it off.

hi! all those options sound quite cool, personally the geology one sounds the most interesting to me but just do whatever u think you'll find interesting, even if its not exactly what u wanna do it's better than doing something u totally dont care about, also have a look at how those courses are assessed and the overall course plan, u might find that some seem more appealing than others, good luck!

Then step back and plan a gap year to give yourself time to think.
You only get one crack at an undergraduate degree - and messing this up, and getting to Uni to realise this isnt what you wanted, is expensive, and misery-making. Nowhere does it say that you can only go to Uni straight from school. Plan a gap year - get a job (any job), earn some cash, and then maybe do some travel. This will give you a chance to think about what you really want to do in life - and why.

Hi there,

They all sound like great options! I have a friend at Uni of Liverpool doing BSc Geography and Geology (slightly different to your choice) and she really loves it there and goes on loads of field trips every year. Also, as part of my own undergrad (at LJMU) I dabble a lot in geophysics and I find it really fun! Geophys is something that many different disciplines needs - like archaeology, construction, engineering etc, so could be a good career path to research into if that's something you're interested in!

If your options so far are geography, geology and geophys and then econ, I personally think that the environmental sciences path seems something you would enjoy more, and that you've added econ as a potential safety - I would definitely recommend doing an undergrad in something you think you'll really love! If you're going through 3 years of a degree just because there might be better job aspects in the future then you might not enjoy it and may regret it in the future. You can always do a postgrad degree afterwards in something completely different if you finish your undergrad in geography/geophys etc and decide that's not a career path you want to take!

Good luck with your decision!

Hello @usaf

I am happy to hear that you are considering Lancaster as one of your options. In terms of employability, although it is important to consider, I personally did not use this as they key motivator when choosing universities or courses, however I do recognise that everyones circumstances are different. Picking the right university for you is a culmination of multiple things such as: module options, employability, accommodation and even the types of societies on offer.

In terms of employability at Lancaster for BA Economics, we are ranked 9th for graduate prospects for Economics, and 10th for satisfaction with teaching. Our degrees are designed to prepare you for a career in industry, business, finance, consultancy or government. Recent Economics graduates have joined banks and financial consultancies such as HSBC and Deloitte, while others have been employed on graduate schemes with major companies, including BAE and the Swire Group.

If you would like to hear from the perspective of a student studying Economics at Lancaster, and their take on employability, I would encourage you to make use of our uni buddy programme where you can ask any questions you like, this is available HERE.
