Cambridge MPP work placement

Thinking about doing an MPhil Public Policy at Cambridge next year. Was wondering if the work placements are any good? Do you get to choose the type of organisation you work with? When do these take place? I am more interested in the NGO/Development space but seems the partners in the last couple of years have been more Finance/STEM based?

Hi, I got an offer to be a part of MPhil Public Policy this year so I have no idea yet about the matter you are asking. However, where can I check about the last year partners that you said mostly more into Finance/STEM based?

I read on another online forum of previous students saying a lot of the reports used data analytics and a few people from stem backgrounds were being reassured they have a lot of financial partners to engage with. The website (https://www.polis.cam.ac.uk/study-at-polis/graduates/MPhilPP/work-placements) with past placement examples sort of showed that intersection between Finance/STEM and C&S topics:

Using Satellite Data on Air Pollution to supplement analysis, National Audit Office (NAO).

Public Adaptation Finance for Climate Action: Analysis of trends and factors influencing disbursement of adaptation aid, Banque de France (BdF).

Modelling the Cost Supply Curve of Coal in India, International Energy Agency (IEA).

This website has past partners but its quite outdated now (2013): https://cambridgemppblog.wordpress.com/support-the-mpp/mpp-work-placement-supporters/

Right, noted. Well, I supposed they have some other partners from different sectors. Or you can always “initiate” I think. I work for my country’s MoFA. So I am hoping to work with some multilateral bodies or consultancy firms etc.

Hello, congrats on the offer!

A question on the date of the application. I'm wondering if they consider the date we submitted the application or the date by which all our references are in? Based on your experience, would you be able to guess what it's likely to be?

Thanks in advance!

Ah good 🙂 Smart thing to do! It was my first application of the season, and I got the app in first and then chased around for the references 😀

I'm a Gates Cambridge applicant too. Fingers crossed 🤞🏼
