Accomodation advice/Help really needed

Around October I moved into my new flat, it was great at first but late October I started hearing a really loud banging noise coming from above me that keeps me awake. I texted my flat and they could hear it too. After we kept hearing it for weeks, we put a noise complaint in because it was every single night. I later figured out that it wasn’t the flat above, but it is actually to do with the heating. Recently, maintenance has just figured out that it is to do with the piping contracting and expanding, but they said that I am the only one complaining and that ‘we are not able to solve this issue’. I don’t see how it can’t be fixed, I googled it and about 3 different fixes came up immediately? The banging happens every single night and keeps me up until 1am. I just asked the rest of my flat to complain and they have done so.

Could someone please give me advice on what to do? This banging noise prevents me and some flat members from sleeping before 1am every single night, and I’m getting stressed about exam season.

Hi there,

I'm sorry to have to deal with this, especially as it is disrupting your sleep and causing you stress.

Make sure your other flatmates have complained, and try to get back in contact with your landlord/maintenance. In my experience, they usually won't do anything if there isn't a huge risk or not enough people complain, so make sure you make it known that it is a big issue disrupting everyone. You mentioned the flat above, do you know if they can hear it too? It might also help to record the noise, especially if your landlord/maintenance claim they can't hear it.

I hope this helps a little, as this is what I would do. It's a tricky situation. Do remember that you are paying to live there, and deserve a certain level of maintenance and livable conditions to go along with that.

Best of luck,

Hi @Carter03052

I would recommend getting in contact with your student union as they may be able to support you and give you advice about your situation.
I would also recommend that you keep records of all communications with your landlord / maintenance and of the issues.

I hope this helps and you are able to get this issue sorted soon.

Hi

I am sorry to hear that you are feeling this way and that it is causing extra stress, especially in exam season.

I would reach out to your personal tutor to advise them of what is happening and how it has been affecting you. They will then hopefully be able to work with your university accommodation to get this issue solved.

I hope this helps,

Hi,

First of all I am so sorry this has been your experience, I understand how frustrating this is!
I would recommend you keep contacting your maintenance people and landlord/agency, be persistent and they may take notice. You have done the right thing getting the rest of your flat to complain, ask them to continue if maintenance take no notice. Additionally, I would recommend speaking to your university wellbeing/support as they may have had students come the them with similar problems in the past.

Hope this helps! Faye 🙂
