Will I get SFE?

Hi, here’s some context:

I done a Comp Sci FY at University of Leicester (23/24) (expected graduation 2027)

I transferred to University of Nottingham to do Computer Science (24/25) (expected graduation 2027)

I have been thinking about it for a while and I want to switch my original 3 year course at nottingham, to a 4 year course so I can do a year in industry which would change my graduation year to 2028

I’m not too sure on how student finance works, but I’ve heard they give you one extra year (of finance) ontop of your original course.

My original course @ Leicester was 4 years, my original course @ Nottingham was 3 years.

If i switch to a year in industry, will I still get funding? I wouldn’t need amaintenance loan whilst doing my placement

Hi OrangeJay,

How many years of previous study did you have before this current year? What year of study are you in at the moment?

Thanks,
Calum

Before this current year, I had done 1 year, foundation year (four year course) at Leicester.
Now I’m in my 1st year of a 3 year course @ University of Nottingham

Thank you. If you have only 1 year of previous study as mentioned and are now looking to change the 24/25 Academic Year to a 4 year course then you would be eligible to do this and receive full funding for the duration of the course. If your course for this year has started or you have received any payments yet, this change will need to come directly from your University to ourselves. Thanks, David

Will I still get funding for the duration of my course

My situation is that:
23/24 - Comp Sci Foundation Year (4 years) @ University of Leicester
24/25 - Comp Sci (3 Years) @ University of Nottingham
I would like to switch to Comp Sci with placement year - The 24/25 year isn’t over so should I ask my university to change my 24/25 course to the Comp Sci with industry year (4 Years) or change it for the 25/26 academic year?

I’ve worded this quite weirdly so if you have any questions, let me know.

Hi there,

Every student is entitled to funding for the length of their course plus one additional year, minus any previous study. This means if your new course is 4 years the calculation would be 4+1=5-2=3 years left of finance given in the final years of your new course.

This means in year 1 of the new course you wouldn't get Tuition Fees, but should get Maintenance Loan and Supplementary Grants if applicable.

Do you have any Compelling Personal Reasons (CPR) why you didn't complete your previous course?

Thanks,
Claire

Hi, I don’t have any CPRs. However, what if I change my 24/25 course to my 4 year course and go into the 2nd year in 25/26, would I still 3 years left of funding?

Disclaimer: No matter what, 25/26 will be my second year as I’m just changing to a course with a placement year

Would the calculation be 4+1=5-1=4 as I have the previous year of study (23/24) however the current year of study (24/25) is changed to a 4 year course
Or would the calculation still be 4+1=5-2=3 and I’d need to ensure I don’t fail a year to avoid not getting funding

If you start the new course 25/26 and start from 2nd year, then based on what you have advised above, you should be fine for finance. Nothing is definite till you apply and we an check this. I would suggest making your application now for 25/26 as applications can take 6-8 weeks to process.

Thanks,
Claire
