Aberdeen, Geology

Hello,I am planning on applying to Aberdeen Geology Bsc and I have a few questions.
1) What are your general thoughts on the degree, were you happy with the lectures and the teachers? I’ve read in many places about the high student satisfaction in Aberdeen, would you say that is the case with the Earth Sciences department as well?
2) How is the accommodation? I am an international student so I have no option but to stay at the halls. I know there is a guarantee for the first year, but I am concerned with what comes after.
3) Employability, how is the support? Is there a placement year, or do they help with summer internships? The school has a reputation for Oil and Gas, is it actually the case? Do Aberdeen students have higher chances at finding jobs in oil and gas companies?
Anything you would like to add?
Hi I did engineering at aberdeen uni and work in Oil & Gas so hope can help

1) aberdeen is a great place to be a student, great facilities (library, sports, campus etc) in medieval campus. Lots of societies and is definitely agree about high student satisfaction. The non-uni side of town is more run down though. Earth sciences are very well regarded though

2) hillhead halls are basic but decent. You can if struggling stay there in 2nd year but most people stay with friends. Also can move into powis place, Fraser studios, causeway view, old firehouse from 2nd year onwards which are private halls. You’ll definitely manage to get accomodation somewhere.

3) aberdeen uni really helps support you getting a job. But getting internships is definitely on you, they advertise online within the uni, but you have to make the effort to apply and find some opportunities. Being at uni in aberdeen shows you are willing to live in aberdeen if you’re looking for graduate work here. It’s a remote part of country so all employers here want a graduate who will stay in aberdeen for more than just 2 years. If you go to uni here it shows you’re committed to the area and have links / friends. I would say that as a geologist your best industry chances are carbon capture. Speaking as an oil and gas engineer. I am seeing first hand how little need there is for petroleum geologists from 2027 onwards in UK North Sea. There still will be a need for them, but competition will be very fierce. There WILL be demand for carbon capture geologists, but not as much money as petroleum geologists though. There will still be petroleum geologist demand internationally though and Aberdeen has a name Europe’s energy capital so the university will have power if you want to work as a petrolum geologist

Hope this helps

Hi, this is the University of Aberdeen rep account. Sorry for missing this post until now! The previous poster has done a great job sharing their experience and I can't top that, so I just wanted to come in with a few links which you may find useful.

1) We offer the opportunity to talk to some of our current staff and students through Unibuddy so you can see if there is anyone available in Geosciences for you to ask questions about your studies: https://www.abdn.ac.uk/study/student-life/chat/

2) You can find out more information on the accommodation we offer here: https://www.abdn.ac.uk/accommodation/
If you are interested in renting privately our Students' Union have more information: https://www.ausa.org.uk/ausaadvice/accommodation/
As the above poster mentions there are a few options after first year, whether you stay in university halls, move to private hall, or find friends to live with/your own flat in Aberdeen if you would like to.

3) We have our Careers and Employability Service which you can get in contact with about employability support: https://www.abdn.ac.uk/careers/
They have some information on internship opportunities here: https://www.abdn.ac.uk/careers/jobs-work-experience/vacation-work-internships-placements.php

I hope these are helpful for getting you a bit more information and if you have any questions I can help with do just ask! All the best with your application.
