St Andrews Earth Sciences

Hello,I am planning on applying to Earth Sciences MGeol and I have a few questions.

What are your general thoughts on the degree, were you happy with the lectures and the teachers? Based on what I have read St. Andrews by far seems to have the best student support and satisfaction would you say that is also the case with the Earth Sciences department?
How is the accommodation? I am an international student so I have no option but to stay at the halls. I know there is a guarantee for the first year, but I am concerned with what comes after.
Employability, how is the support? Is there a placement year, or do they help with summer internships?Which industries do graduates find work in?
Would you suggest going for an integrated masters or a “normal” masters? I can’t seem to understand the difference between them.
Anything you would like to add?

Hi!

I can’t answer specific questions about Earth Sciences but I did Geography, which has some overlap, and have just graduated so know a lot of people who did do Earth Sciences/ Geology. I know that it is a very small school compared to other subjects. This mean that studying in this school offers great opportunities to build strong relationships with your cohort and lecturers alike. Everyone I know who studied in that school has had a great experience and it is a lovely little town surrounded by gorgeous nature, you’ll be able to find your people there.

In terms of accommodation, you can apply to university halls after your first year with a reasonably high chance of getting in each time. However, being an international student does not mean you can’t enter the rental market for student properties in town. Countless international students do that, and St Andrews is very international. Furthermore, if you prefer the hall vibe there are a number of private ones throughout town that you could choose to live in if you don’t receive uni accom after first year. Hope this helps and lmk if you have any other questions )
