Undecided on What Uni for Chem Eng

I have got offers from Loughborough Sheffield and Nottingham for chemical engineering with industrial placement year.
Has anyone got any information about the universities that will be helpful in narrowing it down. I also have a Leeds offer.

All are 'good' for all Engineering subjects. Look at the optional units available at each Uni and for all years of each course - which would you choose if you actually went there? You will probably get invited to Offer Holder visit days at each Uni and these are a useful opportunity to look around, listen to more detailed subject presentations, ask questions, and think about the reality of living in each place. Remember that you have until JUNE to make this decision and you gain absolutely nothing by making an earlier decision.

I say look into the research they do, and look at what the accommodation actually looks like and closeness of possible jobs

I know that Sheffield have the Diamond which has loads of high tech equipment and machines that some other universities dont have. Leeds have really good research opportunities and connections with different companies.

Is the fall in the league tables of Nottingham something to worry about?

All the universities are comparable for engineering.

League tables are largely meaningless (fpr a whole host of reasons), they primarily exist to sell ads. Universities really don’t change that much year to year so volatility in league tables is just a demonstration of how poor they are.

This is really more personal preference, both are great universities.

Visit both - see where you prefer, they are more similar than they are different. Similar parts of the country/cost of living/size/for engineering both have big research departments, strong reputations & industrial links.

There are some differences, Nottingham has a campus on the edge of the city centre, has lots of sports facilities. Whereas i believe Sheffield has a traditional city style university.

Hiya,

I have a few friends who study chemical engineering and a few are currently on placement too. One specific thing my friend mentioned is she enjoyed the extra-curricular opportunities that Sheffield offers that really helped her CV and talking points in interviews. In first and second year, all students under engineering take part in a interdisciplinary project for a week where they work together in small groups to solve a problem using knowledge from their degree.

Sheffield has several opportunities like this which allows students to use their skills from degree to further their growth. We have several student-led projects, some have even beat national records and have gone to America to compete internationally. We also have the iForge, which is one of the few student makerspaces in the country, where you can use tools like laser cutter and soldering for personal projects.

My best advice would be to visit Sheffield on an open day to speak to current students and academic staff and see how you feel about the city as this is where you will be for the next stage in your life so this is just as important as the degree,.

I hope this has helped a bit and let me know if you have any more questions!

Hiya, Thank you so much for your response. Do you think that there's a good amount of graduate work and placement help provided. Also could you tell me why you picked Sheffield over the alternatives

I do believe there is a lot of help in terms of placement help and finding positions for grad schemes as we receive weekly emails with the latest postings on the Employability Services and students have access to a service called Career Connect where you can find vacancies yourself or see if there are any companies coming to campus. For example, HSBC was on campus last semester and they were running a stall with a few employees in the SU that you could go and chat to and get advice from.

There is also the Employability Hub where you can get your CV checked and cover letter help under guidance. We also have this service specifically catered for engineering students as well as our CVs may be more technical in some aspects.

I picked Sheffield over my other alternatives as when I visited the city and spoke to the academics, it was the place I felt the most comfortable. My personal career goals align with research so when I spoke to current lecturers and found out their areas of work, I wanted to come to Sheffield to work on topics like this and I could not see this as much at other unis.

I hope this has answered your question and let me know if you want to know anything else, like about societies or the city!

I preferred Sheffield over Loughborough, and if you have the chance to go there, I’d highly recommend it. I had a great experience in the city and really enjoyed my time there. The Diamond building is a fantastic facility where students spend a lot of time, and it’s equipped with top-tier resources. The course leaders were extremely helpful and friendly, as were the students. Sheffield is also more affordable, and the accommodations looked excellent. Overall, I’d definitely recommend it. I’ll be visiting Nottingham soon to compare, but for now, Sheffield is my top choice.

Thanks for the info! I'm hoping I'll be able to make it for one of their offer holder days. Just out of curiosity, did they mention their industry connections/support finding placements for industrial years to you? It's one thing I'm curious about i can't find much info on online

They have a global engineering challenge week in both Year 1 and Year 2 where you work with other engineering disciplines and people from industry. They said its key to do placement years and they will do their best to guarantee you get one. I have a family friend whos a chemical engineer and he said his firm works quite a lot with University of Sheffield cause of some equipment that they have.

I went notts. I preffered facilities at Sheffield so ended up picking sheffield and I heard from someone they have a good F1 society too. Other than that Notts is good too they have solid labs, calm proffessors everyone seemed engaging and friendly. So I think it comes down to personal preference.
