English Lit with Creative writing or English Lit and Creative writing at Newcastle

Hi there, I was just wondering whether anyone studying at or an alumnus of Newcastle had an opinion of the difference between the two pathways for English lit and creative writing.

Hi there, I was just wondering whether anyone studying at or an alumnus of Newcastle had an opinion of the difference between the two pathways for English lit and creative writing.

Hello,

I’m not a student nor alumni of Newcastle, but I do study English lit at the university of Chester and it was brilliant to hear you wanted to study it! I assume you mean a combined English literature and creative writing degree compared to a single English literature degree rather than a single creative writing and single literature degree? I think to make this decision, have a look at the course content for each degree and consider which appeals to your strengths and study interests the most, as if you don’t enjoy the course, you won’t be able to do yourself justice and work to your strengths. Consider what you want out if your degree course, have you got any idea of what ultimately you would like to do after its completion? This can sometimes help to lead your decision. Also, have you spoken to the tutors in the department? You may be able to try the combination to begin with but then just drop down to the single literature degree if you find it’s not right for you.

Ultimately I think the decision I depends on your own preferences. I know that I am not, as much as I would love to be, a creative writer, I can only analyse other writers’ works, but I’ve got friends who are amazing creative writers, but loathe the analysis so it is really down to individuals.

I hope this has helped!
