The Student Room Group

Lancaster, Sheffield, Birmingham, Leeds, Stirling

Hello from Japan.

I applied these universities related to Linguistics and Applied Linguistics. I've got conditional offer from them because I did not graduate from my undergraduate program.

I don't care about my life place even if I am in a big city or countryside.

Could you share your opinion about the reputations? Or if you were in my place, which university would you go?

Thank you

Lancaster is great for linguistics! They’re always at the forefront of linguistic research, they were ranked 3rd in the world for linguistic research by QS University Subject Rankings!

I’m applying for linguistics too but I think I want to go to Sheffield because it’s Lancaster is pretty quiet, not busy like a city

Hi @2002kougami

I have friends who do linguistics and they enjoy the courses. I have also met one of the linguistics lecturers and he was such a nice guy and also really funny! There are study abroad options which from what I've heard are some of the best times of students lives!
You can talk to our current linguistics students to get an insight into their thoughts on the course here https://www.lancaster.ac.uk/study/chat/?popcardRedirectData=P2RlZ3JlZT01ZGRiZGFjM2I2MTczMTAyMWE4OTJhOGEmbGFiZWw9RW5nbGlzaCUyMExhbmd1YWdlJTJDJTIwTGluZ3Vpc3RpY3MlMjBhbmQlMjBURVNPTA%3D%3D&ub_medium=product&ub_source=University%20Popcard&ub_campaign=&ub_content=

Hope that helps,
Rachel - Lancaster University Student Ambassador.

Hello @2002kougami

I am pleased to hear you are considering studying at Lancaster! In terms of reputation, Lancaster is ranked 4th for Graduate Prospects in Linguistics, by the Times Good University guide! And 3rd overall for linguistics, proving that if you choose Lancaster, you are guaranteed a great education.

In terms of Lancaster as a place to live, we are a campus university which means that in your first year (or further years if you choose to stay on campus) you will live amongst your new friends and flatmates with the comfort of living close to the library and your lecture theatres, making that move from home to university a lot easier. Lancaster as a city is pretty small in comparison to the others that you are considering, but it has everything you need including; restaurants, supermarkets, clothes shops, cinema, bars, clubs, gyms, etc. Lancaster is in the North West of England, meaning we have really good transport links to other major UK cities like Liverpool (1hr 30 min away), Manchester (1 hr) and York (2.5 hrs) and London (3 hrs), meaning that visiting other places is really easy!

If you have any more questions about Lancaster, please do feel free to ask!

Thank you for helping me.

I decided to go to Lancaster University.

Unfortunately, I could not access the student portal site for graduate courses from now on.
How could I reply to the offer in this case?
Thank you.
