What happens if TikTok is banned?

TikTok will be banned in the US on 19 January - unless the Supreme Court accepts a last ditch legal bid from its Chinese owner, ByteDance, that to do so would be unconstitutional.

But even if the country's highest judicial authority agrees with the lower courts - and Congress - that the platform is a threat to national security will that actually stop Americans using it?

Will there be ways to bypass the ban - or could president-elect Donald Trump find a way to stop a law he says he opposed to, even if the courts uphold it.

And whatever happens to TikTok, who stands to benefit from the uncertainty clouding its future?

My FYP is full of people going to another app called rednote which is a bit like tiktok, (I think China actually owns this?)
My prediction/guess will probably be a huge U turn because the US gov probably won't want that to happen

Ciel, are you ok?
The UK isn't getting banned from tik tok.
It's only the US.

it doesn't matter, because it would affect every user. 170 million users are american. sure, there are a lot of people from other countries, too, but most english speakers have no interest in content that's in a foreign language. the app will lose its appeal and popularity. and i don't want my american tiktok mutuals (and followers) to vanish, lol.

Well, Americans can't always hold the weight.
Yall need to learn how to be great and get a personality of your own.

Be thankful you have other platforms shared with Americans.

Don’t worry. Trump will reverse the ban, be praised as TikTok’s saviour, and the American platform will be sold off to one of his oligarch pals.

The world will not end tomorrow.

No-one 'needs' Tik-Tok or any other social media that badly.

The Trump administration was the initial one to suggest banning the app so I don't think so.

trust me, it's not happening. i don't want to sound crazy but i have this voice in my head that tells me all sorts of things sometimes, like a sixth sense kind of thing. it never gets anything wrong. it just knows things, idk how. the ban isn't permanent

Yes it is :colonhash:

No but on a serious note i do genuinely think I became a more informed citizen using tiktok. You can't take anything at face value on there but it is such a good place to hear about things that aren't on the front page of the newspaper, and also minority perspectives. In a generally more positive way than x/bluesky/etc because your face and name are more commonly attached to your profile. Nobody needs it but I do think it had some unique aspects against other social medias and its sad that its gone for americans.

Trump apparently just announced hes putting out an executive order to restore it so it actually is working again.
I think they'll continue to play games back and forth though, im not hopeful for the long run.

No not red note. I heard some people are going on clapper but that sounds sketchy to me. I'm ok with just youtube lol
