I am interested in studying Computer Science for university

I am interested in studying Computer Science for university, I looked up the university I want to go to and I want to know if Foundation Mathematics is done by an exam or written coursework or both, for anyone who studied Computer Science at university ?

It would depend on the uni, no? But generally things like these would be assessed by examination.

Hey,

The assessment methods for Foundation Mathematics, or any module in a Computer Science degree, can vary depending on the university and even the specific year or lecturer. At many universities, including ones with strong Computer Science programs, mathematics modules are often assessed through a combination of exams and coursework. Exams typically focus on problem-solving and testing your understanding of mathematical concepts, while coursework might involve assignments or practical applications of those concepts, such as creating models, solving applied problems, or writing detailed explanations.

It’s great that you’re thinking ahead and researching! The best way to find out exactly how the module is assessed at your chosen university is to check the module description on the university’s website. Universities often publish detailed course catalogues that outline assessment methods, or you could contact the admissions team or the Computer Science department directly to ask.

It’s also a good idea to reach out to current or past students of the program (maybe through university open days or student forums). They can give you first-hand insights into how the module is taught and assessed, which can help you prepare effectively. Even if it’s a mix of exams and coursework, universities tend to provide plenty of support, including revision sessions and access to resources, so don’t worry, you’ll have time to get to grips with it!

Best of luck!

Hello!

As a computer science student at Lancaster university myself, I would highly recommend the course - it is definitely interesting, relevant, and offers a lot of diverse opportunities. So, it's great that you are acting on your interest in Computer Science and doing research.

Regarding the assessment style - this varies between the universities and even between different modules within the same university. As an example, two years ago, my 1st year CS Fundamentals module (which included some foundational mathematics content) was graded as follows:
60% coursework: 2 quizzes during the year (30% each).
40% exams: an exam sat at the end of the year in the final term.

In contrast, my artificial intelligence module assessment was different:
40% coursework: 2 coding projects (so 2 coursework pieces worth 20% each).
60% exam: written at the end of the year in the final term.

Additionally, I have modules that are 100% coursework, e.g. building an app. This is my personal experience - our university has since changed the modules and how they are assessed, as the course is always evolving. That is likely to be true for other universities as well.

To summarise: assessment strategies vary. If you would like to know the up-to-date information, it is best to contact the department at that university and ask them how the module will be assessed in your year of entry. If no contact details of the department are provided, this is something you can reach out to the undergraduate admissions team with.

Hope this helps!

Lancaster University Computer Science Student Ambassador.
