U to an A in a level maths

Hi I’ve been struggling with mental health and have basically done no work until now. Would it be possible to get an A in a level maths (happy with a B) and how would I do it. I’m also a private candidate.

I'll be honest those are really unrealistic goals. Speaking from personal experience. You could apply for private tutoring but by now it is probably too late if your finals are in May. You'll have to speak to careers advisors or counsellors what your options are if you fail a subject. Check if you can take another year to do it or start working on improving on the subjects you are good at.
That doesn't seem likely, honestly. My daughter managed to go from an E to a C in one of her A-Level subjects, but from a U to an A is kind of a bit pushing it.

Personally, I wouldn't say that it's impossible to do, but it would definately require a lot of hard work. I'm also doing a level maths as a private candidate, last year, I sat my AS and got an E which I'm really dissapointed in. This year I wanted to be different, but I've pretty much done very little progress. I too don't exactly know how I'm going to study maths at this point, but I would say the biggest reason on how I got an E rather than a U (cause I've started actually grinding like 2 - 3 weeks before the exam) was practice questions after practice questions. It was very tedious and boring after a while, but it's definately worth it if it meant getting a B or even an A/A*
Hope that helps!! Xxx

I'm not sure if it's possible to improve that much (it's all up to your own dedication), but what I would recommend is past paper questions. These are literally the holy grail to maths as you need to apply your skills to different questions.

It’s possible, last year I went from an E to an A in biology, E to an A in further maths and D to A* in chemistry in 2 months while doing 1 other a level but you would have to put in a lot of effort, cause I would revise like the exam is tomorrow for 2 months straight (did all-nighters plz don’t do this cause you just end up not being able to revise very well the following day), would not recommend. Since this is for one A level I think with enough effort you could definitely go from a U to an A if you revise consistently from now until the day you sit your maths a level, most importantly make sure the revision you are doing is productive. For maths A level PMT questions are very useful, do past papers and 100% do most of the questions in your a level textbook (ticking off the individual topics to make sure you’ve not accidentally missed anything). I forgot a whole chapter in my bio had to revise it day before the exam with Miss estruch. I would also recommend you watch past paper walkthroughs for maths on yt very useful for stats in my opinion.

if u wanna go from a u to an a you legit gotta dedicate all your time to maths. watch vids to understand concepts then apply it to ppqs. then start doing past papers and analyse your targets spam qs on those and repeat and you may not get an a but it will definitely help your grade a lot

I’m writing this 2 months after this was posted, but were you on a U at the time that this was posted? I’m in upper-sixth right now and am on my way to getting an A in maths right now (having gotten U-C grades in lower-sixth last year)(I’m currently at As and Bs).
Right now, all my teachers are recommending are doing an absolute ton of past papers, verbally communicating with other students/asking for help, and active recall. Overall I think it’s about really understanding the concepts rather than pretending to know or having a basic ability to recall small facts, I always make sure to spend 15 minutes on each question whilst I’m marking to properly understand the thought process + make roughly 5-10 flash cards per past paper I do. I’ve also taken up training to become a GCSE maths tutor to strengthen my core maths.
I’m not sure if any of this is relevant, I’m sure that this may not a very reliable answer either.
Some resources I really like are:
exam board last papers
MadAsMaths papers
Senior maths challenge / maths Olympiad questions (for general critical thinking)
Mr Bicen maths
gold / A&A* level papers
talking to other students (if possible)
Not sure if this helps at all, good luck!!
