Disappointing.

I started my masters course at UCL this September and all I can say is that this university has been such a disappointment. I don't know if this is just for my course but the teaching is horrible and modules are not run to a good enough standard. It feels like every week I am emailing my course representative to ask them to do things that should already be in place.

For example, lectures are not being recorded. How exactly am I supposed to learn things if I do not have access to recordings that I can revisit. If you cannot record a lecture, then you need to provide your students with adequate material such as notes etc.

I am doing a computational heavy masters that requires access to UCL services on campus. Why are my classes in Birkbeck where I can't access these things? For the past two semesters now we have been timetables in these lecture theatres that cannot accommodate for my courses needs.

I have exams where I'm being questioned on things that haven't been covered in the module. There is no coursework and it is genuinely so silly.

I love what I am being taught but I feel like UCL just isn't good and is making me hate something that I was so passionate about.

Let me not get started on the fact that finding a study space is IMPOSSIBLE. Having to book a seat in a computer room is such a tragedy.

Does not sound great tbf.Do you not make your own notes at lectures though

Lectures aren't recorded at UCL as a matter of principle, unfortunately. After they were taken to court as part of a class action lawsuit from students during COVID who were suing them for the recorded lectures and other remote activities provided, they have sharply moved away from those. If you have a SORA which includes a need for lecture recordings these should be provided to you. It is really frustrating though if you don't have a SORA for that, especially if you miss a lecture due to sickness...

Your exams should be based on the module syllabus - if there are genuinely questions not part of the syllabus you should raise with your course rep ASAP.

I would challenge some of the other points however:

Birkbeck is like 5 minutes away from the Malet Place entrance where you can get access to the majority of the university services, I don't think it's really a huge problem to get from an LT in the IoE or Birkbeck back to the main drag on Malet Place. If you have accessibility requirements then you should def raise these so they can try and support you however.

For study spaces it can be difficult at some times of year for sure, I can imagine particularly if you need access to a uni PC. That said you can always get one of the loaner laptops from the science library (I also find the science library often has seating available). So there are possible solutions...

Not all modules have coursework and plenty of modules on various programmes do have coursework (or are only assessed by coursework). So this is really neither here nor there I think...

See https://www.ucl.ac.uk/isd/services/audiovisual-av/audiovisual-help/teaching-spaces-birkbeck-faqs.

That page suggests you can download and run UCL's VPN to connect to UCL's IT network if you are on Birkbeck's wifi - have you tried that?
