Do universities blacklist those who receive an offer, accept, then need to withdraw?

I’m curious if this could be the case, and if it would be only the specific program that would blacklist the applicant, or the university as a whole would blacklist the applicant. Thank you.

Hi @harfazar,

Great question!

At Oxford Brookes (and at many other universities), withdrawing from an offer doesn’t automatically put you on a ‘blacklist’.
We understand that life happens, and there are many reasons why someone might decide not to accept an offer.

As long as you meet the entry requirements for the course you're applying to and put together a strong application, withdrawing previously shouldn’t impact your chances going forward. Every application is considered on its own merits, and our admissions team is here to review your application fairly and thoughtfully.

I hope that this helps! If you have any other questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch 😊

Thank you for your response. I do specifically mean withdrawing after already accepting an offer, not simply declining an offer. Would you have any insight into this, and in particular if Oxbridge has its own practices on this?

Hi @Harfazar

You are most welcome 😊

The same applies if you decide to withdraw after accepting an offer. At Oxford Brookes, withdrawing from an offer, after it has been accepted doesn’t automatically put you on a ‘blacklist’.

It may be worth checking with Oxford and Cambridge as each institution will have its own policy.

I hope that this helps clear things up! If not, please do not hesitate to drop any questions below.

If you tell them you aren't going to be enrolling/matriculating before the course starts then no university I'm aware of has any issue with this.

After enrollment, almost any course won't care if you have to withdraw then subsequently reapply as long as they are satisfied there are no academic issues which led to the withdrawal, with the exception of medicine (due to the huge costs involved in subsidizing training of medical students, medical schools in the UK essentially universally do not accept applicants who have started but not completed a medical degree at any other medical school for any reason normally).
