Exeter people share their application journeys

Hi, I'm in yr 12 and thinking of applying to Exeter this year. I want to ask current and previous Exeter students about their application journeys, namely these things:
- how they found it
- what they did (specifically)
- how they prepared
- top things they included in their personal statements
- something they would like to say to someone applying to Exeter
- why did they choose Exeter?
- how did they decide which course to apply for?
- what was the interview process like (if applicable) and what sorts of questions were asked?
- tell us about the entrance exams (if relevant - not every course requires this)
- did they take any online courses (for their personal statement) and if so, were they helpful?
- (this is just a fun one) what was something they didn't expect when arriving to Exeter?
- and feel free to give us a fun fact about either about Exeter Uni or the city itself if you want to

You don't have to include all of this - these are just some ideas and you can absolutely talk about other stuff as well. I would greatly appreciate any responses as this would be very helpful not only for me but for other aspiring Exeter students as well. Thanks in advance, and if you haven't graduated yet, then best of luck for your uni studies and congrats for getting accepted!

Hi based_J,

Apologies for missing this post! I will try my best to answer some of your questions if you are still interested.

How have I found it?
I have enjoyed my time here, I would highly recommend coming on an open day or tour of the university as different people have different preferences and I think each university is unique and it is up to you to go and see if you can imagine living there for at least 3 years. What I did - I assume you mean grade wise or degree wise?
I did A-levels in Economics (B), Mathematics (A), Psychology (A), and an AS level in Chemistry (B). This led to me starting my course in BBL Business and Law with Industrial Placement on the Penryn Campus.

Personal statement
Honestly, I cannot remember much about my personal statement but I just remember that I wrote about why I was interested in the subject and any interests I had that linked to it. Quite often universities will only look at personal statements if they cannot choose between two identical (grade wise) students so I wouldn't stress too much as long as you have the grades, but do make sure to put the effort in just in case.

Why I chose Exeter?
I chose Exeter due to the uniqueness of the course - at the time no other university was offering a joint course in business and law which was very key to me as I had interests in both. And the other key aspect was that it is a Russell Group university which means it offers a high level of teaching and a good reputation which I factored in as a key aspect for future employability. I had also been to Cornwall many times on holidays with my family so I knew how beautiful it was which really helped.

Was there something I didn't expect?
In my case, studying on the Penryn Campus, I found it unexpected that we shared a campus with an arts university (I was aware of it before but never fully understood what that would mean in reality). This makes for a more relaxed atmosphere as a lot of the degrees Exeter offers on this campus are quite intense so it is nice to make friends with people who do very different degrees to you and may have different interests as well. This means you can meet a big variety of people making university life that much more exiting and fun.

Hope this helps a bit 🙂
