Centres for external students for English GCSE in London (and cheapest first)

Good morning, just for a dare two of us at an old age are going to sit the GCSE English language papers (without much prepping). I understand that AQA is the soft Board, etc. Edexcel has a page for the self-taught, but this is as far as it goes. I know that usual there's a lot of back and forth with crammers and then finding a place where one can take the test. Does it exist online (like IELTS). Cost? Further Ed colleges I used to rely for info in the past (Camden Westminster-Kingsway and Morley) have front-line staff who don't know and are incapable to help. I'd like to write an article about the experience. For one thing, it's preposterous that it's demanded for the PGCE after other degrees etc (plus English at BTEC). Also how come good students are getting 4?
