Counselling Masters - is it worth it?

Hi everyone, I graduated in the summer of 2024 with first class honours in Education (Non QTS). I'm wanting to go into the field of mental health/student support within Further/Higher education and was just looking for any advice please.

I'm thinking of studying a masters in counselling, however I'm a bit apprehensive as it is quite expensive, takes 2/3 years and I've heard that there's not many opportunities in counselling. I've looked into it and another option might be completing a masters in mental health nursing or occupational therapy to help me in my chosen career path, they also take a few years.

I was wondering if anyone has gone down the counselling route/studied this at masters level and what their experience was? Thanks in advance

Honestly, I get where you’re coming from. To become a counsellor, you’d definitely need to go through therapy yourself (which isn’t cheap), plus find placements as a volunteer counsellor—which can be tricky to sort out.

The thing with doing an MSc in Counselling is that it’s super expensive, and, to be honest, you could get to the same place by working through the Level 2, 3, and 5 counselling courses. It’s not a masters but just as effective in terms of qualifications. When you think about it, it feels a bit pointless to spend all that money on a master’s when there’s a simpler route.

Also counsellors really don’t get paid as much as they should, considering how demanding and valuable the job is. For the expense and the emotional weight of the roll, it doesn’t always feel worth it. You see what I mean?
