The Student Room Group

Exeter Uni

Hi guys! I am currently on a gap year and have been offered a place st exeter uni for Media and communications. when I went I loved the course and the campus. My only worry is that it’s too “posh.” As someone who has free school meals all throughout school, I really worry I won’t fit in. But I think this can be said for alot of Universities, especially russel groups. Please let me know what your experience with if you are from a lower income family or if you have studied communications at the university of exeter thanks!

Hi Anonymous,

Congratulations on your offer from us, first and foremost.

Please don't be deterred by stereotypes! You will meet a wide variety of people at university, all from different backgrounds. There is no tolerance for discrimination of any kind here, and ultimately, everyone is super friendly. You will 'find your tribe', so to speak - it is entirely dependent on who you surround yourself with. I was pretty worried that I would feel like a fish out of water when I first came here, but I settled in very quickly and found myself amongst similar-minded people who I am proud to consider my closest friends.

There are groups in place here that do aim to create a community where students feel welcomed regardless of their background, such as the 93% Society, who you can find on our Student Guild's website. This society is free to join, and a good way of meeting new people. However, I would also recommend joining societies based on your interests - you will find that you fit in regardless. You can find a full list of groups here: https://my.exeterguild.com/

If you have any other concerns, please do reply.

Grace
University of Exeter Student Ambassador.
