The Student Room Group

Annoying new room mate

I'm a PA student on placement and live in hospital accommodation and I have exams coming up. This new radiology student moved in and I can't stand her. She is awake till 12am on week nights and walks around the flat, slamming doors and laughing loudly. Even when I am trying to revise she walks in and out of the kitchen every 5 seconds and the door slam so loudly. I wake up at 5am an try to be as quiet as possible. There was another girl who lived here before eh, she was lovely and not loud at all.

I have contacted the housing people asking to change rooms and they don't do internal moves. They said talk to her but when I walked into the kitchen to speak to her, she walked out. Its even in the contract not to make noise at night

How do I tell her to stfu in a nice way?

Do you have a residential life team or similar (not affiliated with housing services)?
Hi there!

If you're really struggling with this and your accommodation team aren't really helping out, then my advice would be to get in contact with your Students Union. They're a completely independent organisation to your University and so will likely have their own accommodation team that can help you write complaints and move requests etc.

Hopefully they'll be able to help you out!

Hi there,

I am sorry that you have been dealing with this, it sounds very difficult to live with.

Do you have her phone number/ social media at all? You could message her to explain how you are feeling and that you have talked to the housing people and they have advised that you talk to each other about the situation. Or, message her and ask if you can talk at some point during the week as you need to be able to sort something out that suits you both.

If you don't, when she comes into the kitchen, just say immediately that you would like to talk to her and if she is not free then, could you do it later. You both live there and want to be able to sleep/ do work etc, so you may be able to sort something out.

Or, as has been suggested already, try and talk to the student union as they can sometimes help you with issues like this. It will be good to talk to an independent party about this as they are likely to be able to help you, or could contact your housing association on your behalf to see if they can sort it out.

I hope some of this helps,

Hi

I am sorry to hear that you are feeling like this, I would contact your accommodation provider again, to say that this problem is still happening and get them to work with you further on this.

I think it might also be a good idea to speak to your personal tutor as they will be able to help and support you further.

I hope this helps,
