Is Further Maths a necessity ?

I am currently studying Maths Econ and CompSci thinking of applying to LSE Imperial and Oxford for either economics or compsci. Are these unis in my range considering that they prefer students with brilliant grades and further maths. If i can achieve A*A*A with good work exp and a good application could i get in ?
Check their entry requirements. If they say that further maths is required then you’ll be rejected for not having it. If it’s preferred then your application will be less competitive than if you had done further maths. If its helpful then it shouldn’t affect your application but its advisable to take due to the high maths content in the courses 🙂

The thing is i’ve read the requirements and the stats, the majority of the intake took further maths, and a small amount got in without it but weren’t able to take it either because they didn’t meet the criteria or their school didn’t offer it. I didn’t meet the criteria either

95% of PPE applicants at Oxford had A-Level Maths and 25% Further Maths.

95% of LSE BSc Economics had A-Level Maths, Further Maths and Economics.

Also, you can self-teach A-Level Further Maths with Pearson Edexcel textbooks having model answers for free included and numerous YouTube channels. 😉

Compsci is much more maths heavy than econ. As a current student in the DoC at Imperial, FM is preferred and also extremely useful to keep up with the course. Without FM, you would need to work exceptionally hard, both on the course and for the admissions tests. You're lucky that STEP is no longer a typical offer requirement since that basically enforced having to do FM.

No chance at Oxford CS without FM and whilst Imperial is still possible, pretty sure they prefer FM as well.
For econ you prob won't get into LSE without FM but you'll be fine for Imperial and Oxford

Nah not really for Imperial either imo. Currently in DoC at Imperial and don't know a single person without FM. Tbf I don't know many people

As an ex-LSE BSC Econ grad and investment banker and career coach, you can get into banking and PE with PPE

Yes it can. Getting in investment banking from LSE is less about the course, but networking and making sure you get internships.

I'd probably agree with you tbh, I'm still in y13 so I can only base what I said on the university websites. Almost everyone I've seen applying to imperial CS courses does the maths/FM/physics/CS combo so I'd guess it's more of an implicit requirement rather than explicit one.
