St Hughs HELP!

I just got accepted at St Hugh’s and was wondering some things:

- Is the food pay as you go and is this the same at other colleges? I always thought Oxford food catering was included but obviously could be wrong.
- do you get any choice of accommodation in first year and how does it all work
- Is there usually an offer holders day?

Also would love if anyone who goes could tell me what it’s like!

Congratulations on your success.

The college will send you information, probably after A level results day. Catering and room allocation systems vary from college to college. Most colleges send out a termly bill (in Oxford-speak the bills are called "battels") for accommodation, dinners in Hall, and miscellaneous other things such as JCR membership. Breakfasts and lunches may be included in battels, or be obtained on a pay as you go basis.

Different colleges have different opportunities for self catering within the college, although one of the good things about a collegiate university is the chance to focus on work and social life and not have to shop for food and cook.

Most colleges have offer holders' days. If St Hugh's has one, it will send you details in due course.
Hi! I’m at Hugh’s.

1. The food is pay as you go. To my knowledge, this is the same at most other colleges.

2. You don’t get a choice for first year. You’ll likely either be put in Main Building or Kenyon (most first-year students are in one of these two buildings). Main and Kenyon are okay. They’re not the nicest accommodations the college has but you’ll get the chance to stay in nicer buildings for second and third year. The college has a balloting system for second and third years.

3. There are open days that are open to everyone and those take place on college grounds. They’re usually targeted at potential applicants, I think. Last year, Offer-Holder Open Day was held online.
Hugh's is a great college. I'm really happy here. It's not a stuffy college and I feel like it is more inclusive and friendly than some of the other colleges. We've also got great food compared to a lot of colleges - our formal food is consistently good and all my best formal meals have been at Hugh's. Hugh's used to be a women's college and is proud of that heritage.

The college is a little farther out from the city centre than other colleges but that doesn't bother me. In fact, I enjoy that that contributes to creating a peaceful college environment. It’s really comforting. To deal with the distance, I basically cycle everywhere. This means I can get almost anywhere within a 5-10 minute cycle and I don't feel the distance. Cycling is also fun. Get a bike as soon as you get to Oxford and you'll be golden. I bought mine via an online bike marketplace.
Oh yes, the college (especially the library) looks nicer in real life than in pictures. When my friends and I got to Hugh’s, we were all pleasantly surprised by the library haha

No problem, and it’s not harder to make friends from other colleges. Just show up for society stuff the same as everyone else and you’ll make friends.
