Complex student finance question!

Hi my daughter is 18 and will be starting uni this September to study primary education. She has a 4 month old son and rents her own house with him and her partner. I’m assuming that when she applies for student finance, it will be based on her partners earnings (he works full time and she’s on maternity leave after previously working fulltime also) rather than mine and her dads, as she lives completely independent of us? Also, what year will student finance ask for income details of as if it’s 2023/2024 she will still have been living at home then in which case would be our income but that’s no applicable now? Will she have to declare her maternity pay and universal credit as her own source of income? She only gets uc due to being on smp. She will also be eligible for childcare support from student finance has her son will be going to nursery, can she apply for this straight away?

Sorry for all of the question, I just want it to go smoothly for her come March when applications open.

Thank you in advance for any advice 😊

i believe student finance would only not consider your and your husbands income if she is estranged, universities expect parents to help with their childrens cost of living
I've moved your thread to the Ask SFE forum so that it will be answered by official SFE/SLC reps during normal office hours.

Hi Jayney,

If your daughter has dependants then we wouldn't assess her based on your income. As parents you wouldn't need to do anything. If she lives with a partner then we'd use their income and assess her funding based on their 23/24 earnings. She would apply for the grants and the funding and the assessors would determine her eligibility when they process her application.

Once applications are live, if she requires any assistance in making it or needs help with any of the questions we do have a Live Chat function available in her account that she can use for assistance. Thanks, Jason
