One thing to do is to get into the habit of going to the university careers centre at least twice a week and attending every event going.
Also - join the accounting society.
I’d also join a society where you are talking to people and learning about their thoughts on careers and the future. Walking or hiking groups tend to be good for this, as do dancing groups.

Thank you for all of your advice, I really appreciate it, wish me luck, how would I go about joining the accounting society?

I think the course/ university will have one as they normally do.’just check on your first day. Ask the course admin to see if they know.

If you are interested in Tax, maybe try applying to the big 4 accounting firms? They all have offices in Manchester and offer Tax graduate programmes. They also sponsor employees to get their ACCA or other qualifications done, which might be a good starting point.

The main question is do you want to work in accounting or finance? There are numerous different jobs that fits within that. I did the same degree and currently work as a tax specialist. Don’t worry about not having a plan, I didn’t have a plan either - I was filling out my MSC application when I came across an article talking about the tax specialist programme.

On a whim I applied half asleep at 1am and somehow kept getting through each stage and now it’s my life.

Most people don’t have solid plans, or if they do it never turns out that way. Just keep an open mind and chase things you will enjoy, something will definitely find you.

I joined the tax specialist programme for HMRC. There’s a thread on this forum about the 2024 entry, you may have missed it but you could give 2025 a go as they take in applicants every year. No previous employment requirements, just a 2:1 in any degree. They give you full training.

Website - https://www.civil-service-careers.gov.uk/hmrc-tax-specialist-programme/

Salary is about £2,350 a month and once you complete the 3 year course you are promoted up to a senior £60,000 position.

Outside of HMRC every major company has a similar graduate scheme- Deloitte, KPMG, E&Y etc.

Hi to whoever will read this, i completed my undergraduate in accounting & finance last July achieving a 2:1 at MMU, went on holiday and ever since i came back i say to myself “now what?” Where do i go from here? I mean im working from home and have been for almost 2 years but not accounting related, I feel like society expectation really gets to me.
I planned on doing a MSc in Accounting & Finance and I start on Monday, I applied to a different university so I can have a change of environment, now I feel anxious, nervous, not knowing what to expect, fear of failure!
I have a fear of the future, which I think is pretty normal for us men? I just need some advice, I chose to do the MSc to allow me to have extra time to explore options for my future career, to also gain more knowledge in accounting and finance, if I could go back in time I would have chosen total different subjects, I had no guidance when I was choosing my course.
Now I’m here, starting my masters in a day and feel completely lost.
I look forward to hearing from whoever wants to give some calming words
Many thanks !

Hi pal, firstly I’d like to say well done, and I wish you all the success, and secondly, always always take advice that the older people give you, if you really have a passion for accounting and finance go with it, you will get a place in uni, and put your head down I’ll repeat put your head down, the only reason I came out with a 2:1 was because I really focused, and when you start, do everything on time, and I mean everything, all your coursework, pay attention in lectures I can’t stress that enough, and when it comes to picking your optional modules for year 3 if you really have a passion for the course which I’m guessing you do, choose all the exemption modules, this way if you would like to do the ACCA after to become chartered accountant which is top of the top, you will find it easier, and the answer to your question is, I would have changed my course to something more science based but I do like accounting and finance now I have grown to become interested into it, I’m into tax and the uk tax system etc etc, but young kid, stick at it put your head down and please take my advice you will go far in life, one more thing! EXPERIENCE! Please kid, get experience in uni, you will have the chance to go on a placement year, after your second year, go for it apply ! That company will most likely give you a job after you graduate as well, stick at it kid good luck

Thanks for that!, Would u say going to university still has a chance of entering the finance and accounting industry? , even though apprenticeships seem to be more popular and practical now. Also can anyone let me know if they think accounting or finance is better?

I think the application usually comes up around September - October, and it closes around late October to November.

It appears that the 2015 positions are closed. You need to wait until next summer when they re-open the application process for TSP26s. Like I said they take in over 200 applicants a year.

Click on the TSP25 thread on this forum to see what dates they opened applications for 2025 as the time of the year will be the same each year.

On the student room, search for tax specialist 2025 and read from people currently going through the application. You are too late to apply this year but in September 2025 the application will open up again.
