Economics, Maths and Further Mathematics

Hi everyone,
So i have chosen these three subjects for my A levels, and want to do business management and administration related degrees later on. I want to know that is this a good combo and should I add a 4th subject and what should that be?

Good combination for what youre aiming for 🙂
Hello there!

Your A-Level choices of Economics, Maths, and Further Mathematics are an excellent combination for pursuing degrees in Business Management or Administration. These subjects provide a strong foundation in analytical thinking, problem-solving, and economic principles, which are highly valued for business-related programs and careers.

For most universities, including Coventry University, three well-chosen A-Levels are sufficient for admission.

Adding a fourth subject depends on your interests, workload capacity, and whether you want to broaden your options. If you decide to take an additional subject, consider one that complements your current choices and aligns with your future goals.
Options like Business Studies, which offers practical insights into management and marketing, or Psychology, which helps understand human behavior in leadership and marketing contexts, can be beneficial.
Learning a language, such as Spanish or French, can be valuable for international business, while History develops critical thinking and research skills that are transferable across disciplines.

If you're considering universities, Coventry University offers exceptional programs in Business Management and related fields, with a strong focus on practical learning and industry connections. Their BSc Business Management and BSc International Business degrees are designed to provide hands-on experience through placements and projects, preparing students for successful careers in business.

International Business Management BSc - https://www.coventry.ac.uk/course-structure/ug/fbl/international-business-management-bsc-hons/

Your current A-Level combination is already well-suited for business degrees, and adding a fourth subject is optional based on your interests.
Coventry University’s career-focused programs could be an excellent choice to help you achieve your aspirations in business.

I hope this helps!
Good luck!

Kind regards,

Just letting you know that most people who do Further Maths do four A-Levels - it could potentially cause problems for you in the future if you had the option, but didn't, do a fourth A-Level. Often, universities don't count Further Maths as equally valuable to an unrelated A-Level (even though it's definitely more work) so it's worth researching before committing yourself to a minimum of three.

If you would add a fourth, choose what you think you'd like the most! I would avoid business studies due to the overlap with microeconomics but otherwise, I would go off an enjoyment basis.

Really? Will it cause a problem for me? How so? (I'm gonna do the same subjects)

It’s potentially problematic if you’re doing 3 A-Levels including further maths - some unis wouldn’t count it as a full A-Level.

Regardless, for the top unis, if you had the chance, but didn’t, do 4 A-Levels (including further maths) for courses that require fm (maths, physics, comp sci, engineering (econ) etc.), you’d have to explain why - 90% of applicants would’ve had the extra A-Level, and then it could look bad.

Worth researching (4 with fm vs 3 with fm)…

FYI, I do maths, fm, economics and chemistry

oo nice combo if I had to choose 4 I'd to the same. I haven't directly seen on any course except a few for LSE which don't want fm if ur only doing 3 subjects. I really don't want to do 4 alevels unless I have to so hypothetically will maths, econ and chem be better than maths, fm, econ as its more diverse or whatever and doesn't have the fm problem. I mean technically my school greatly discourages us from doing 4 a levels and doesn't really give us the option unless we rllly want to so.....

I might ring some unis (uhm if they answer) and enquire if it's not clear for their course (im gonna do finance and accounting)

thanks for lmk 👍👌

To be honest, you don't need further maths for accounting & finance. Economics becomes very maths based at university level such that fm is often a worthwhile choice.

Best to just research honestly... shouldn't matter too much anyway
