Student finance for switching courses?

By the end of next year I will have completed 2 years of my current course. I want to switch to medicine which is an additional 5 year course. Will student finance cover all these years in education, and if so how much will they cover it?

Any help or advice is very appreciated

Hi George, what is your current course subject and will you be studying full or part time? Thanks, Jason

My current course is MPAS physician associate (UCAS code BB96) at UoR and I would be studying medicine full time

Hi George, what is the name of the university you are thinking of applying to? Can you please confirm this will be Undergraduate Medicine you will be looking to change to? And you are planning to start your studies in September 2025? Thank you, Stephen.

Hello Stephen, thank you for your reply. I'm unsure of the university yet as I'm just seeing if it's an option I could have going forward. It will be undergraduate medicine and the start will be in September 2026. Thank you, George.

Thanks. Are you going to be taking a year out prior to this or continuing with your current course? Thanks, Jason

I will be continuing with my current course until I know whether or not my application is successful which will be ~March 2026. Thanks, George.

Hi George,

It would be quite hard for us to confirm if you would be eligible as the course is so far away. We never know when policy may change or not. You would be better waiting till closer till the start of your course so we could advise you better.

Thanks, Drew

Okay thank you. If the policy didn't change and I was going now, would I be eligible? Thanks, George.

Hi George,

If it is an undergraduate medicine course we will take your previous study into consideration. You’re entitled to funding for the length of your course, plus 1 additional year, minus any years of previous study you have. Here’s the calculation we used: 5+1-2=4 years of funding left for the Tuition Fee Loan. You would need to self funded your 1st year of Tuition Fee Loan as it stands just now.

Thanks, Drew
