I’m scared I’m going to die young.

I’m 16 and I feel so hopeless about the future. I keep having panic attacks and depressive episode about getting cancer or a terminal disease and dying young. It makes it impossible to study for my A-levels, because I feel like ‘what’s the point if I’m gonna die before I achieve my goal?’.

I’m just so scared.

Please help.
Statistically most people don't die young. That's why we have an aging population. You are more likely to live to old age than you are to die young.

I'm so sorry you're feeling this way. It’s really tough to carry these fears about the future, especially when they make it hard to focus on what’s important to you right now. Please know that you are not alone, and many people face similar worries. These thoughts, though powerful, are often fueled by anxiety, which can make worst-case scenarios feel inevitable even when they’re not. It might help to talk to someone you trust—like a parent, teacher, or counselor—who can provide support and reassurance. You deserve to feel safe and hopeful about your future. Taking small steps, like grounding exercises for panic or reaching out to a mental health professional, can make a big difference. You are stronger than you feel right now, and this moment doesn’t define the incredible potential of your life ahead.

I have friends in the same position as you, i know it can be scary but you're bigger than that, remember to try your best and leave the rest because some things just aren't in our hands.

like i said dont hesitate talking about this, you can dm me if u want, im happy to hear you out, and if its embarrassing or scary to share your feelings, i know it can be, just message me for a friendly chat! Dw you got this, these feelings aren't permanent

Thank you everyone. I’m already speaking with my school counsellor. It’s just that because it’s the weekend, and I have four essays due next week, I’m really struggling to cope. Thank you for the reassurance. Im not feeling much better if I’m honest, but I’ll try and get through the day.
Bang out the essays as best you can in the time available. Don't worry if they're rather less than perfect. Just hand them in on time.

Don't post on this forum till you've finished all 4 essays. Priorities!

What are you doing to reasonably minimise the chances of you getting cancer, through your lifestyle?
The sort of lifestyle that will considerably reduce your cancer risk will also help when it comes to other leading causes of death, such as heart attacks, strokes, dementia.

We all have to die some day. It's better if it's not your fault.

Taking control of this vitally important aspect of your life should help to reduce the anxiety.
Comparing your lifestyle to that of other people should help to make you feel good about yourself and your decisions.

Are there diseases in your family which would reason your panic?

If you are scared of death, you can't live your life with joy and can't show your true potential. It is better to appreciate your life as long as or as short as it is. Everyone dies one day anyway.

I know, but it’s still terrifying to think about, and I’m struggling to handle it for some reason.

See it positive: there were so many young humans on earth who even died before aged to year 1. Compared to the many children and babies 150 or even 200 years ago who died before aged to an adult, the death rate for them decreased enormously thanks to a better way to feed and cure people. The improvements in agriculture and medicine have made a big contribution to this development. Even if you get ill, there are so many diseases they don't lead to death anylonger, because they can be cured!

Your right, if I’m honest I’ve been feeling much better than I did when I made this post. I’ve spoken to my counsellor about it and it’s calmed my nerves a lot.

It is fine to hear that you coped with your anxiety better now. Take it easy, life is hard enough.
