Facilities at De Montfort University

Hey there ! to all my fellow international students at De Montfort University (DMU) or those considering joining us this year. As a current student one of the things, I appreciate the most about our campus is the state-of-the-art facilities that make learning, socialising, and overall student life both enjoyable . Whether it’s the advanced engineering labs, 24-hour study spaces, or the vibrant social hubs, DMU provides an environment where students from all backgrounds can thrive academically and socially.

DMU offers incredible subject-specific facilities for every course, ensuring that students gain hands on experience with industry standard equipment. Even if you’re not studying engineering like me, there are specialist facilities for every subject, from cutting edge design studios for art students to high tech computing labs for computer science students.

Some of the faculty and course specific facilities include:
Advanced Engineering Labs As an Energy Engineering student, I have had the opportunity to use some of the best electronics labs, equipped with renewable energy simulators and a grid simulator that allows us to test different energy systems.
Mechanical Manufacturing Lab This is where I’ve completed many hands-on projects, built working prototypes, and even 3D printed parts that I’ve designed myself.
Aeronautical and Engineering Facilities Students studying Aeronautical or Mechanical Engineering have access to wind tunnels, engine test cells, and flight simulators, making their learning experience incredibly immersive.
The Computing and AI Labs Students in AI and cybersecurity have access to dedicated computing labs, helping them develop skills using real-world software and hardware.
Art and Design Studios If you’re studying a creative course, there are specialist studios, workshops, and digital design suites that provide everything you need to bring your projects to life.

24/7 Library & Study Spaces
One of my absolute favourite things about DMU is the Kimberlin Library, which is open 24/7 during term time. As someone who often studies late into the night, I love that I can access resources, book study rooms, and use computers at any time. The library is also a great social space. I often meet friends there to work on group projects or prepare for exams together.

Beyond the library, there are other study spaces across campus, including:
The Learning Zones Quiet areas where you can work individually or in groups.
The Vijay Patel Building A stunning modern space that provides a perfect environment for creative students.
The Innovation Centre Great for students who want to collaborate on projects and even develop their own startups.

If you are somewhat active and want to keep healthy we have Sports & Leisure Facilities
As someone who enjoys swimming, I make full use of the Leisure Centre, which includes:
A 25-meter swimming pool
A fully equipped gym
Exercise and sports courts for basketball, badminton, and more sports facilities

When we are not in class there are plenty of facilities to fill up the extra time like :
The Food Village a good place to grab coffee or lunch between classes.
The Student Union (DSU) A vibrant hub for social events, club meetings, and student activities. This week, there’s an International Movie Night, which I’m looking forward to attending!
The Riverside Café & Mill Studios Great spots to unwind, especially with a view of the river.

As an international student, having access to world class facilities is important to our experience whilst studying abroad as this comes at a hefty cost. As an engineering student my financial investment has been more than worth it based on the facilities I’ve had access to including those that are from home such as engineering software .
