Lipa university application

I am currently doing a levels and have submitted my applications for university 2025. My top choice is Lipa university to do BA (Hons) Filmmaking and Creative Technologies. I have been offered an interview for the 31st of January. For the interview they have asked my for a portfolio and a critical review. I have completed my portfolio, however, when it comes to the critical review I have know idea what to do. I don’t know what a critical review is, what to write about, basically anything to do with it. I was hoping anyone had any advice on what to do, or really anything to with critical reviews.
Thanks.

Hi @nellgraham,

Firstly, congratulations on being offered an interview at LIPA for such an exciting course!

I did a quick look at their website and from what I can tell, I think a critical review is essentially your analysis of a piece of work, such as a film, TV show, or creative project. The link I listed below gives guidance on the interview process for Filmmaking and Creative Technologies course. It includes what the university would like to see for their critical review. Page 2, specifically, includes "Please provide a written review about a film you have seen recently. In your review, please concentrate on reviewing visual storytelling, use of technology in sound and image and style, tone and mood. The review should be no longer than 350 words". If you still are left unsure, I would recommend you call or email the admissions department to help with this enquiry. Also the page also includes when and where you should upload the portfolio and review. Best of luck!

Hiya, I had my interview for the same course at LIPA earlier this month and have not long been offered a place. For the review I picked the film “Gangs of New York” and did a breakdown about what I thought of the different elements of it, specifically: camera work, production design, script and acting. They do ask you about it in the interview so be sure to cover something you have watched recently.

Think of it as an English essay about a film you like essentially and just make sure any opinion you express about the film can be justified or even note areas you would have changed/improved if you think it could be necessary. Hope this helps and feel free to reply if you have any other questions. Let me know how it goes

Thank you so much. 😊

I’m really sorry to hear the interview didn’t go as you’d hoped. I know how tough these things can be.

I was wondering if you wouldn’t mind sharing a bit about the kinds of questions they asked you in the interview? It’d be really helpful to know what kind of things they focused on. Really appreciate your help, thank you 😊

Hi there I also had my interview earlier this months and like the previous guy I also didn’t get a place , some questions that they asked was why I wanted to go LIPA, why I wanted to study filmmaking, why I chose my movie for the critical review, and just went through my portfolio and asked me to explain what I did on each and the process of making the movie, wish you luck

I think you may have misread, I actually did get offered a place- might have worded it weirdly sorry! They asked me a lot about the review I did and why I chose it. They focus heavily on your portfolio too so be prepared to talk about certain things in it and comment critically and positively on your work. They asked about what I would do differently in a certain film and why I took the roles I did in them. I wouldn’t say that what I was asked would be a fair guarantee on what they will say to you because I know other people in my group had different experiences. Best of luck and lmk if you have any other questions
