Best University for Biomedical Science?

Hi everyone,

I’m currently trying to decide between Cardiff, Surrey, and Exeter for studying Biomedical Science, and I’d love to hear your thoughts!
I’m particularly interested in:
The quality of the biomedical science course at each university
Campus life: how the facilities, environment, and community feel
Accommodation: quality, location, and student experience
If you’ve attended or are attending any of these unis, I’d love to hear about your experience or why you chose (or didn’t choose) one of these options.

Any advice would be super helpful as I’m struggling to make a decision! 😊
Thanks so much!
Karen
Hi there!

Awesome to hear that you're considering Cardiff! The Biosciences courses are brilliant here.

When it comes to assessing the quality of courses, I recommend having a look at Discover Uni. They basically summarise student satisfaction surveys and employability surveys for each course on one page, and you are able to compare different courses. Biomedical Science with Placement Year for example, has 72% of students saying that they were satisfied with the course. Of course, these surveys rely on who actually fills them out and they can often be inaccurate. But they can give you a good general idea of what the course is like

I think that Cardiff definitely has a buzzing student life. Its always busy during term time and we have a really active student union - with over 200 societies and many reps. There's always something going on!

Accommodation is good, from my experience. There's lots of different types of accommodations that suits all budgets and lifestyles, in my opinion. Since Cardiff in general is one of the cheaper cities in the UK, you'd find that student accommodation is also slightly cheaper than in other parts of the UK. I'd say that you also get the option to go into private accomodation if uni-owned accomodation doesn't suit your fancy.

I hope that's helped, let me know if I can help answer anything else!

Thank you very much I’ll definitely be checking out that website!
If you don't mind me asking, I have noticed that one of the courses (Surrey) offers an IBMS accredited course whereas the other two are not IBMS accredited.

Are you aware of the difference between an IBMS accredited course (long story short, offers diagnostic lab entry) vs a non-IBMS accredited course (effectively prevents working in a diagnostic hospital beyond a support role without module top ups) outside of something such as management level?

Hi, yes I did do quite a bit research on the IBMS accreditation - which is why I was originally leaning towards Surrey - but I think that for me personally I would like to work in research labs in the future (after possibly after doing a postgraduate course) so the accreditation is not really a big deciding factor for me.
