uni application

I guessed that. A bit more info would help as there are only a few that require it when taken normally (y13).

I was talking to an university admission consultant, and they say that I don't have enough supercurriculars (too little competitions/olympiads) if i want to apply to oxbridge. So they strongly recommended me to take step earlier to increase competitiveness

I take it its for cambridge (or oxford or ...) and from your post history youre chinese and ....? I guess this is the type of info that may help

Ive heard of some chinese applicants taking step early and applying with it. Assuming you do well, I cant see that it would hurt, but Id expect that admission people would still want a reasonably rounded personal statement, so not just focussed on taking step early which to do well will eat a fair bit of your time between now and june. Supercurriculars are not just about having competitions/olympiads/taking step early. In another post, you mentioned something about not doing that well in smc/bmo, but that kind of implied that you got through to bmo which is ok. So did you look at much elementary number theory, ... have you gone through any/many books, ....

You could try contacting one of two colleges and seeing what they say about taking step 2 early.

Hi thanks for the reply 🙂 . But I've been hearing very different things from china and here 😭 - they put a lot of emphasis on having loads of competitions & taking step early, which is very different from what im seeing here. So i really don't know who i should trust (I know wider reading is also very important but in china, its not as important as the competitions stuff. And generally people with good STEP grades do manage to get into good uni's).
Yea thanks and i will definitely contact some colleges i want to apply to abt this

I think contacting a college directly would be best. So probably not trinity, but one of the ones with a reasonable maths intake. Think carefully about the question(s) you want to ask, so whether taking step 2 early is beneficial for an application for an international student, how important is smc/bmo, would self study be acceptable to base a personal statement around, ... It really is a bit of a lottery and even good performance in bmo/bmo2... does not guarantee an offer. Its a combination of demonstrating an enthuasism for the subject and being teachable in a tutorial context.

For home students, it would be rare to do step early and some kids may not mention smc/bmo results. For me, its more about what you did/learnt/..., rather than a once a year test score which you may have little support for and how you weave that into other reading/...

BTW if you do contact one of the colleges, Id be interested in what they say about taking step early (international student) and competitions so it would be good if you could update this thread. Thanks.
