Hi, I left college in 2021 and went uni but dropped out. I have decided to go back but I need a reference for my application I think but I have no contact details of my teacher since my college campus has been permanently closed. What should I do? Someone pls answer Thanks
Hello @goldenmaknae ,

Hope you are well.If it’s just the campus that has closed, try contacting the central administration of the college or trust, as they may still have your records. If that’s not possible, universities are usually flexible so try and reach out to their admissions team, explain your situation, and they may accept an alternative reference, such as from a previous employer or mentor. Check any old documents or emails for contact details, too. Best of luck with your application!

If you have already been to Uni you will need to use that Uni as your UCAS reference, not your last school.

Thank you! I will try doing that. Although I’ve already looked through old emails but don’t have access to my college email/account.

Just email your Personal Tutor or give your Departmental office a call.

I left college in 2021 and my college campus has been permanently closed since then so I have no contact details of my teachers. I studied at university for a year but I’m afraid if I ask them to give a reference for my application they won’t know who I am? I left university in 2022 and don’t know who to use as my academic reference, what should I do?? Please help

The university should be able to give you a reference. You should have had a personal tutor/advisor, so at least one person knows you.

I’ve never spoken to my personal tutor, except one time when he messaged me about missing assignments. I’ve never spoken to him one on one so I highly doubt he remembers me at all.

It's likely you'll be on file somewhere, regardless of if he remembers you. It does mean any reference provided will be extremely generic though.

Other Unis just want to know that you have not been 'asked to leave' because of academic misconduct (cheating essentially) or 'other sanctions' (serious bad behaviour) - and your current Uni will know what to write. Phone the Department office and ask how you arrange this.

Im pretty sure he wont have anything to say about me because we never talked. I dont want to decrease my chances of getting in. should i use a reference from a course or mentor? would it still be accepted?

This concerns me. You've been removed from a programme of study because you didn't hand in most of the work. It's been a few years, which is fine, but are you going to turn a new leaf and engage with the programme of study at your new university?

Yes. That’s the point

Given that we are three working days before the January guaranteed consideration deadline, you might want to consider submitting the application without a reference for now. Ideally you need to call your uni choices and get their approval to do this.

In the meantime you need to be liaising with both your college and former uni (academic department) to what they can provide. Nothing you can do about the content in either case.

Hi sorry to jump on this thread, but this answer may help me and Id like a bit more info. I've emailed my previous place of education, and actually visited in person to drop off my details to the reception to have them sent to my previous lecturer (although i didn't write why i was dropping this off on the paper - ive been stressed and didnt think, but i did tell the receptionist that i needed a reference so i hope this info was passed on).

I am currently working but would prefer to get a reference from my previous lecturer as my lecturerwill know me better (Ive only been working at the current workplace for 3 months and I am a very shy person).

Should I contact the uni, explain the situation to see if they let me submit my application, and then continue to try to get into contact with my previous college? How long should I try before I look at asking my manager for a reference instead and letting the uni know I cannot obtain an academic reference? Sorry for all the questions.

Yes to the first two questions, contact your uni choice(s) to let them know what’s going on. They may be fine with no reference initially, or may tell you that the course won’t be closing any time soon and there is no rush to meet the guaranteed consideration deadline.

How long you persist with the academic reference depends on what your choices say with regards to timescales for getting an app in to them.

I gave my employer as a referee and UCAS had no issue with it, I think that's usually accepted for people who are older/not in school. (Assuming you have an employer, if not they might take a reference from an organization you volunteer with or something)
