@DerDracologe do you have any ideas for a first topic.

Maybe something on what schools should do to help with these issues? I feel like if schools were more proactive and involved students (mine kinda does but im not sure that’s normalised) then they’d have a better knowledge to go into the world and protect the planet. Sorry if that’s not the kinda thing you were thinking of, im super bad at coming up with conversation topics

How can schools better address Climate Change?

I personally think that schools should do more to get their pupils involved in nature. That way they’ll feel closer to the issues because to a teenager who isnt really passionate about the environment i think it could be easy to think that bush fires on the other side of the world just aren’t your problem. Running forest school sessions or frequentish trips to local nature reserves would allow students to connect with what they would be fighting to save. Also schools could put more emphasis teaching pupils about local issues relating to pollution and biodiversity- could be included similarly to PSHE or during tutor time or at the start of science lessons.

Schools should hold regular surveys on students views on what their school can do to protect the environment. Schools should also set up an environment committee. Schools should also get students to care about the environment and should help students support the environment. Finally, schools should act as a good role model.

I’m so glad to see a thread like this! Protecting the environment is something I care about deeply. Personally, I’ve started growing a small vegetable garden, just imagine how much plastic packaging you can avoid by growing your own food. I also use public transportation or walk whenever possible to cut down on emissions.
I've invited you to the society.
Does anyone have thoughts on the ban on producing ICE engines after 2030?
I personally think it’s much better than banning their use because that would be extremely wasteful and probably even more unpopular! The thing is it probably will mean for some people that they’ll keep their old ICE cars or maybe even buy overseas (not sure if their import will be banned…) rather than switching if theyre kind of set in their ways but that could be seen as good because it means people use their cars for longer rather than buying new ones just because they want them which seems wasteful to me, like they already have a car why do they need another 😅

:ta: for using the thread.
It's a great idea but for this to be effective the government needs to encourage businesses/homeowners/councils/landlords to put non ICE vehicle friendly infrastructure in (especially in Rural Areas). My local area is a good example as we have barely any Public EV chargers and most of them that do exist are in the 3 towns in my local area. My school has 0 EV charging spaces whilst my primary school has 1. I personally prefer Hydrogen Vehicles but infrastructure for that is even rarer. My landlord also won't put heating pumps or electric vehicle charging point at our house because of cost.
How is EV charging in your area @DerDracologe?
Has everyone heard what BT is doing?

Definitely agree about there needing to be more EV charging points.
Where i live theres a few people who have their own private chargers however i have to say I haven’t noticed any at my school or elsewhere really- ill have to keep a look out! There’s some in some supermarket car parks which is good.
Are you asking about BT increasing the number of electric vans they have?

 Garages are a good place to have charging points, its where ive seen most of them (usually garages adjoining a hotel for a travel pit stop)

Had not heard about that, very profit-oriented which is sad

Thank you so much for inviting me to this group!! I think ban is good, but I'm just a bit mad at cars in general at the moment. EVs are a step forward but all the materials and processes are still problems, and we'll still need roads and as you guys said some much needed charging points - I feel like there needs to be some larger change to make public transport more available, accessible and affordable (sorry for that alliteration 😞) for everyone, so it's easier for people to take those or cycle and walk? I just feel like we'd have better streets and neighbourhoods without so many cars everywhere, but idk how that world would work rlly since people need independence and stuff (and many ppl literally depend on cars). But sticking to EVs, I hope we find a way that doesn't involve lithium batteries etc. to make vehicles really sustainable! sorry if this was just blabber and sorry ive not been active much but i saw this and had to say something :'') But rllyyyy love this page tysm guys for realiving it <3
I read this article this morning. Have you seen a rise in river pollution in recent years in your area?
I have seen quite a significant increase in dead fish floating in the river near where i live which is very upsetting. I researched earlier this year about local government response but they dont have a long term plan, just incident response. I think councils need to be coming up with precautionary measures against oil and sewage contamination.

I've definitely seen water quality get worse recently.

It's awful, i feel like its not being addressed enough because we can't see it as clearly as litter on the streets. it's still crazy that there's so little being done since it's not just an environmental crisis but a health one too ☹️ agree with the need for precautionary measures, im surprised that they aren't already strict enough to prevent those deaths 😔
