SQA Higher Maths

Hi there, my Higher Maths Prelims are tomorrow, my school uses P&N papers which are known to be a bit tricky.

Does anyone have some exam technique recommendations for when I’m actually in the exam? I sometimes lack confidence with my answers

Thank you

Just did my Higher maths prelim a few weeks ago, wasn't a P&N but I got 97% so I'd like to think I'd do well in a tougher paper.
What I did was make sure I knew the content, recognised what each question was asking me to do, then was able to actually do the question.

Time is quite tight in maths so while you can take your time, you don't want to spend too long obsessing over one question then realising you still have another question or two to answer in 5 minutes. So my advice would be to attempt each question to the best of your abilities the first time, then go on to the next, but if a question stumps you for more than a minute or so, leave it and come back. A lot of the time it is the case that you haven't yet settled into the test and you aren't thinking right, so when you come back to it after doing the rest of the questions, you can do it pretty easily.

Finally I will share with you my secret technique: instead of just looking over any questions that you thought were tough, looking for mistakes you most likely won't see, just hide your first answer and redo the question. This way, if you have made any mistakes in the first one you are far less likely to make them again (something like a misplaced number or a negative instead of a positive). You should get spare paper and if you don't just ask the teacher for some, I ended up redoing my whole paper 1 and it made me gain at least 5 marks I wouldn't have got if I had just looked over the paper instead of attempting the question again.

Best of luck to you, I'm sure you'll get on fine.
If you have any other questions feel free to ask.
