Hi there!

Have you attended open days or requested prospectuses from any of your options? This can be a great way to get a feel for a uni, and ask lots of questions to current staff and students. You can find our prospectuses here. Alternatively, the UniBuddy platform is a great way to reach ambassadors for specific courses and unis.

Hope this helps,
Charlotte, Student Ambassador 🙂

Late reply, but I’m currently in 1st year BA Fine Art at the University of Leeds. I can’t say much for history of art but all fine art / fine art with are put together. The university itself it’s great, the campus is lovely and there’s lots to get involved with. However, I wouldn’t recommend the fine art course. My year is oversubscribed and they’ll probably do it again for this next intake. Even though they have almost doubled their intake, they haven’t doubled the space for us to work, so we are squashed into small rooms with no space to do work, lots didn’t even have a chair and a table.

Most lectures are kind, but the technicians aren’t so welcoming. They act as if you are ruining their day just by asking for their help, what they are paid to do. You cannot access workshops openly, even if you have had an introduction, apparently this happens in second year. They will host workshops each Thursday, but most are repeated weekly and it’s impossible to get onto them as it’s 5 in each workshop, that’s around 20 a week and it’s difficult to get on one because it’s first come first served and people set alarms as if it’s a ticketmaster queue. There was talks of changing this system but nothing did.

All in all, I’m quite dissapointed in my experience. The university is great but the course does not live up to the reputation of a Russell group university, there’s obviously a lack of funding, you can tell if you look at the facilities and level of teaching they have on BA Art and Design compared to fine art. I’m tempted to drop out, but I think I’m hooked onto the uni and it’s reputation, and I think this is something that reels people in
