Msc Biomedical/ Hematology & Transfusion medicine

I am interested in pursuing an MSc in Biomedical Science in the UK but have not yet decided on a specific university. I have a few key considerations when selecting the institution. Firstly, the university should be close to the city center for better access to facilities and opportunities. Additionally, accommodation options should be readily available, and the tuition fees should be reasonably affordable for international students.

While researching MSc Biomedical Science programs, I noticed some variations in course offerings. Some universities provide a general MSc in Biomedical Science, while others offer specialized pathways such as Biomedical Science (Hematology), Biomedical Science (Microbiology), or even MSc Hematology and Transfusion Medicine. I would like to understand whether an MSc in Hematology and Transfusion Medicine is considered equivalent to an MSc in Biomedical Science in a broader sense. Does it fall under the umbrella of Biomedical Science, or is it a distinct field?

Furthermore, I am curious about the placement opportunities available for students who complete an MSc in Biomedical Science, particularly for someone with a prior BS (Hons) in Medical Laboratory Technology. How does this background influence employability and career prospects in the field?

Currently, I have shortlisted the University of Chester and Manchester Metropolitan University as potential options. The University of Chester is my top priority because its tuition fees for international students are comparatively lower than those of other universities.

Hi @Aneesified

It's great to hear that you are interested in studying Biomedical Science at the University of Chester 🙂

It sounds like you have already done quite a lot of research, but should you need anymore information on the course you can find our MSc Biomedical course page here. We have some current undergraduate Biomedical Science students online, including some international students, who would be happy to chat with you about their experience of studying this course at Chester. You can find them here by searching for Medical and Life Sciences under subject area.

You can find lots of information about being an international student at Chester here, but should you need to speak with anyone directly you can reach out to our International team via email - [email protected].

You mentioned that one of the most important factors for you is the location of the university in relation to the city. Chester is a great consideration as our Exton Park campus is based just a 10 minute walk from the city centre. Chester city centre is relatively small but with plenty of things to do and see, so everything is walkable and public transport links are very good to the wider area of Cheshire, Liverpool, Manchester and London.

Good luck with the rest of your research and let us know if you have any questions.

Best wishes,
Becky

Hi @Aneesified

It's great to hear that you're interested in studying at Man Met!

Regarding course distinctions, you can think of it as Biomedical Science being the broad subject area, and courses like Haematology and Transfusion Science, Medical Microbiology, etc. being specialisations within Biomedical Science. If you're looking for something niche (or have a specific career pathway in mind) then I'd advise picking one of the latter subjects. However if you're looking to keep your options open then I recommend applying for MSc Biomedical Science. To choose the right course for you, have a look at the course content and entry requirements of each course to see what interests you the most.

Manchester Met is located just outside Manchester City Centre (a 10-15 minute walk) and has great bus links into town and the wider Manchester area for accommodation. You can find information about accommodation for Postgraduate students here

As a large university, we have a strong international community from over 100 countries. You can find information for international students, including entry requirements, how to apply and scholarships, on our International page here

I hope this helps! Don't hesitate to reach out if you've got any questions.

Chloe 🙂
