Business Courses

Which business course doesn’t involve a lot of maths? Maths is not my strongest point and I don’t think I’ll do well in that area.
I studied business and marketing for a year before dropping out. I’m looking to either study business psychology or business with hr management. Any advice?

Hello @goldenmaknae 👋

It's brilliant that you're wanting to get back into studying business at university - have you considered the University of Essex? 🤔🎓️

You could study BSc Business and Human Resource Management at our Colchester Campus with access to: the UK’s first zero carbon business school building with a state-of-the-art trading floor with Bloomberg Financial Market Labs; Essex Startups who can support you and your business ideas with mentoring, workshops and funding competitions; Essex Business Club where you can network with other entrepreneurs and guest speakers; and more. 💼📊

The entry requirements are 120 - 112 UCAS tariff points, and there's the option study abroad or work on a placement for a year to gain extra experience as part of your degree. In your first and second year there is an accounting module, but you can speak to current students on Unibuddy about the maths content to be more prepared. 📱

The University of Essex is just outside of Colchester, less than one hour away from London on the train (with three stations near to campus). Our Students' Union is amazing, with over 165 societies to join, a library (open 24/7), gym and sports centre (free if you live on campus), cinema, two bars and a nightclub on campus. 🌟

I hope this helps, please let us know if you have any more questions 😎

Hey @goldenmaknae,

I hope you are doing well.

It's great to hear that you are interested in studying Business Management with HRM at university.

At the University of Southampton, we offer BSc Business Management with Human Resource Management, which includes optional modules so you can tailor your degree to your interests. There’s also an option for a Placement Year, which can give you valuable industry experience. You can explore all courses here.

You can find out more about all the compulsory and optional module choices here. While many courses focus more on people, organisations, and behaviour, some may include a few accounting or basic maths modules.

There are various support services available to students, including a dedicated maths and statistics support team. Personally, I found meeting with them incredibly helpful when tackling numerical aspects of my course, as they provided clear explanations and useful resources. If you're ever unsure about a topic, they’re always there to support you!

Overall, I find the student life here extremely fun and exciting. Southampton is a lively and student-friendly city with good connectivity to London and other cities. The university has a vibrant campus with green spaces and beautiful gardens. There is always something happening that you can get involved in! There are plenty of activities and events taking place on the campus and around the city, with many pubs and places you can go out to with friends. The people in Southampton are also friendly, supportive and helpful.

Further, the university provides students access to a wide range of opportunities and activities that can help them gain work experience and develop essential skills, such as on-campus jobs, enterprise events, recruiter fairs, training programs, internships, and much more! Southampton University Students' Union is extremely active and offers students numerous events, clubs and societies (over 400), ranging from academic clubs to ones related to sports, hobbies or culture.

I hope this helps!

Hello there!

A Business Psychology degree is a great choice if you're interested in understanding how psychology applies to the workplace. It focuses on areas like consumer behavior, leadership, decision-making, and workplace motivation rather than complex financial calculations. This degree can lead to careers in HR, organizational development, or market research.

Alternatively, Business with HR Management is another strong option that involves minimal maths. This course emphasizes leadership, employee relations, recruitment, and workplace well-being. HR roles require strong interpersonal skills, problem-solving abilities, and an understanding of employment law rather than advanced numerical skills.

Since you've already studied Business and Marketing, you might also consider Marketing and Communications, which focuses on branding, advertising, and consumer behavior with only basic statistical analysis.

At Coventry University, there are several business-related courses that suit your interests while minimizing maths requirements:
For example:
BA Business and Human Resource Management - https://www.coventry.ac.uk/course-structure/ug/fbl/business-and-hr-management-ba-hons/

If you prefer a general business degree, Business Management is also an option, as it allows you to specialize in HR or marketing without focusing too much on maths-heavy subjects like finance or accounting.

I hope this helps!
Good luck!

Kind regards,
Reka - Coventry University Student Ambassador
