700 under the word count

I have written a case study. I was bang on the word count which was 2500. Now i have cut down words because i thought i was above the word count because of the other information on the work sheet. Now i have cut out the words. And i am 1800 without references. I thought the word count included all the tiger information i had put in the work sheet but now i have read the case study requirements and the word count only means the word count guided questions. Now i am well under the word count. Do you think i will fail?

Hi there,

Its unlikely that you would fail for being under the word count (that would be very harsh!), however some unis do penalise people if they are significantly under the word count.

If you maximise your use of the available words you do stand a better chance of getting more info/analysis in, so its worth making the most of it! Have you written a brief intro to your case study, to give it some structure? Is there perhaps one more example from published literature you could add to one your paragraphs with a bit of analysis to bring you closer to the word limit?

Hope this helps - wishing you good luck!

I was within the word count but i got confused with how they wanted the word count so i cut off a lot of information and this resulted in me having a word count well being the required amount.

Just to give this claim context: it's not generally about penalising for being under (next to nowhere does penalises for this reason alone), but more that being so far under the count - almost a third! - is broadly indicative of engagement with the task that is in some way lacking or inadequate.

Hi

Word counts can be tricky in assignments especially when you have to balance all the words so that you can meet all your learning outcomes. I would advise you to speak to your module leader and the library team who will be able to best support you with word counts.

I hope this helps,

Matt

Hi,

It is unlikely you will fail solely due to being under the word count, however it is likely this will limit the marks available to you as it may be that as a result of cutting down, your assignment does no longer contain the amount of detail required. If you are worried or upset I recommend speaking to your academic tutor and explaining the situation to them, while they won't be able to change your grade, they may be able to offer you some reassurance and advice.

Hope this helps! Faye 🙂

Hi there,

Firstly, the word limit usually allows +/- 10%, which in your case will be 2250 - 2750 words.
Secondly, word count is only a part of the assessment criteria, and in your case, you are not under limit too significantly (such as 1000 words would be for example).

Although I am sure you would get some marks deducted, I doubt that you might fail the assignment solely based on the word count.

Let me know if you have any questions
