Bristol accommodation

i was wondering about the accommodation situation at bristol despite applications not being open yet - i’ve seen people saying that they’ve been allocated twin rooms when it’s been none of their choices and i am genuinely so scared of this happening as i really would refuse to share a room, for personal reasons

Hey x, what I recommend is the day applications come out apply. The early you do it the better so research where you want to stay and look at prices early. Hope this helped!

Bristol accommodation is as expensive as London, and there are big problems finding affordable accommodation after your First year.

You would only be likely to get a twin room as an 'emergency ' allocation and only if you were be at the back of the queue because you had come through Insurance / Clearing etc.
Heyy, you could check out PBSAs. Most of them are within walking distance of uni (think 0-1 miles) and give you an option to choose from studios, en-suites, and shared rooms.

Go online, do some research and check whether they fit your budget or not. If you need any leads, you can hit me up in my DMs

That’s rubbish. At Bristol it isn’t first come first served. You fill out a form with 9 preferences within your chosen budget and then they use a algorithm to allocate the rooms. The lower your stipulated budget the more likely you are to be given a twin room but even then if it wasn’t one of your choices it’s pretty unlikely to happen especially if iBristol is your firm choice.

Hi, if you don't mind me asking : are the preferences your preferred accommodation, like a specific hall ? Or is it more "I prefer an ensuite" or the West Village ?

You could choose the same hall but with a different room combination several times though.

Anyone one considering/know anything about Wills Hall? xx
As a parent of a daughter thinking about firming Bristol and a daughter in her first year there, we have just been made aware that there is a significant change to accomodation applications this year. Unless we have read it wrongly, you can now only state your price cap and budget and preference of catered or self catered. You cannot express a preference for any of the accomodation villages or halls.

That’s not good!! Especially for students with content heavy courses and very long days who have traditionally avoided SB ( very social but too far out for vet med students who have to get to Langford) Hopefully the algorithm will build the degree course into the considerations when allocating 🤞🏻

It does read like that! It’s definitely not good!

Yes it's really unfortunate. My daughter was pretty easy going about rooms and halls but not being able to even state a preference for a village is really putting her off firming Bristol

Same. My son is now considering firming elsewhere purely because of the accommodation issue. He’s very sociable but also on a tight budget and had specific ideas about the size and type of flat he wanted in halls. He thinks it’s such a big risk to just be allocated somewhere on results day that could be the opposite of what he was hoping for. At Sheffield, his second favourite, he can literally pick the room in the flat in the block he wants, write a bio about himself and check out other people’s bios before choosing. Such a shame with Bristol as accommodation and where you live in first year is a really important issue for most students.

Having a child that used the old system but all the same got her 7th or 8th choice I really would say DON’T let the accommodation influence your choice of uni. Halls is a year in your life and the friends you make come from a variety of sources. Yes halls do contribute, but there is also your course and the clubs and societies you join. An algorithm is used to allocate the hall, with budget, course etc being taken into consideration. There has been a huge investment in accommodation over the last 5 years so the chances of getting something completely unpalatable are slim. The 7th or 8th choice that we had allocated ended up being brilliant despite the lack of an en-suite. A pair of flip flops did the trick and a bit of mutual respect for and from the fellow flat mates.

Thanks. Good advice.
Hi just to check, does this new system mean that you can not state any preferences for any of the halls or whether you would like accommodation in the North, East or West?

You now cannot state anything other than budget, room type (en suite or shared bathroom), catered or self-catering and any specific requirements eg single sex flat, or due to a disability. You can no longer specify any specific area/location or hall. We were told this was so that students would have a more guaranteed way of ensuring budget was prioritised, so I guess it’s good in that respect, but not in other ways. Though at least everyone is in the same boat.

Thank you for clarifying, that is unfortunate though
