Accommodation for the University of Aberdeen

Hi all, welcome to the University of Aberdeen accommodation thread!

I understand that accommodation options is something a lot of people have on their mind when going to university. Most of you will be leaving home for the first time, many of you will be moving to a different part of the country entirely, and wanting to know about where you're going to be living will be a primary concern.

I thought it would be useful to have a thread about what accommodation is available in Aberdeen and a space for you all to ask any questions you might have about it. Be they questions about the location of accommodation, what facilities are available, or what you may need to know before moving out, I hope this thread will provide a space for you to ask any questions you may have and chat with any other people who are considering a move to Aberdeen!

Just a couple of key links for the start of the thread:

To kick things off, I'd like to give you all a bit more information on the accommodation the university offers! Our Hillhead Student Village near campus is where we have our student halls. There are a few different options available with varying pricing and facilities available: https://www.abdn.ac.uk/accommodation/our-accommodation/
You can click boxes below different options to compare the features of different options and can click on them to see some more photos of the rooms.

The main difference between some of the options is if they are ensuite or you will be sharing toilet/shower blocks with people but be assured that there are cleaning staff who look after shared facilities. The rooms typically feature a bed, desk, and storage space, and there are shared kitchen and living spaces where you can spend time with flatmates and friends. There are also options for quiet halls, alcohol-free halls, and same-gender halls to help you feel comfortable in your new living situation.

I'll be posting some more information in this thread about the facilities at Hillhead and other aspects of student living but hope this gives you a bit of a better picture of student halls to start with!

The Hillhead Student Village is where our student halls for Undergraduate students are and you can find their location here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/hcZC2P6R4Gi9yV747
This is about a 10-15 minutes walk from campus right across Seaton Park or there's a bus which runs between campus and Hillhead pretty regularly. The student village is made up of the accommodation buildings as well as the Headspace Building, which is the communal building in the centre which houses bookable rooms and music rooms for group/society activities as well as a food hall and grocery shop. The accommodation team also have their offices there with a help desk where they're very happy to answer your questions and provide any help you may be looking for, and it's also where Hillhead's 24 hour security is based.
You can have a look at a bit more information for residents here: https://www.abdn.ac.uk/accommodation/resident-info/

How far it is from Hillhead accommodation to the Suttie Centre

How far it is from Hillhead accommodation to the Suttie Centre
Thanks for the question! So Hillhead is located here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/txqZccTa53udY9Uo7
And the Suttie Centre at our Foresterhill medical campus is located here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/aiPCd6sdfn7YzChu7
The 9U bus service connects Hillhead, the Old Aberdeen campus, and Foresterhill and you can see a schedule here: https://www.abdn.ac.uk/real-time-buses/9u.html
So even though there is a fair distance between our accommodation and the medical campus it's still pretty easy to access. A lot of medical students do stay at Hillhead and make the commute, it's certainly not an unusual thing to do! Effectively you can either get the early buses up there or walk to campus from Hillhead (about a 15 min walk) and catch one of the ones that run through the day. There are also other buses in Aberdeen which would get you from one area to the other but this is specifically the bus service for students.

I hope this helps, and do let me know if you want more info about travelling within Aberdeen!

How difficult is it to get your preferred accommodation if we have gotten a conditional offer and will be firming the university?

Hi, apologies for the delay in replying to this! Thank you for the question. To be honest this varies a lot from year to year depending on the number of students looking to book and the accommodation they're most interested in. We do have a good amount of each type of accommodation available and so there's never an issue with actually getting a room but I will say that certain ones, such as those with ensuites, do tend to go fairly quickly.

In terms of booking accommodation, the first step is getting your student ID. These will be getting sent out to unconditional students hopefully in the next month or so and they will have the chance to book accommodation then. If you're conditional then you won't be able to book accommodation until you have fulfilled your conditions when exam results come out in August. Most accommodation options should still be available at this point, but it is first-come-first-serve and so there's not a guarantee that your preferred option will be available. Once you're actually booking though you will get the accommodation you apply for, and so there's not a chance of thinking you'll be getting something and then not actually receiving it.

I realise the wording here may be a be convoluted but I hope that makes sense! If you'd like to discuss this any more or have more questions please just ask.

If I put my unconditional offer for Aberdeen down as insurance, obviously I can’t apply for accommodation at Aberdeen. In August when I get exam results if I end up with my insurance in Aberdeen would I still be guaranteed accommodation as long as I apply before end of August? Is there a distance you need to live away from uni to be eligible?
How early can my contract begin before the semester starts? I am thinking about when I should arrive in Aberdeen, and hopefully, I won't need to find another place to stay before I can collect my keys.

I got an email from them yesterday and it mentioned that we will be given them from April onwards but I don’t know any more than that.

Thanks for the question! Yes we do still guarantee accommodation even if you don't make us your firm choice until later. The deadline for accommodation applications to guarantee accommodation is the 29th August, and even if you don't make that date there may be rooms still available and certainly the option of other student hall providers. There aren't any exclusions based on where you're from, it's something which is available to all incoming first years 🙂 Hope that helps and do just let me know if you have more questions!

Thanks for the question! So I don't think we have exact dates confirmed yet, but usually you can move in from the weekend before Welcome Week starts which this year would be the weekend of the 13th September. We'll send you out clear details of this in time as this is just an estimate at this stage. If you did need to be in your accommodation earlier than this please email [email protected] and our accommodation team will be able to let you know about options for arriving early.

Edit: also just to clarify you can still move in after this weekend if you're not able to get up that early. We would recommend being here for the start of Welcome Week but it's not a problem if you can't make it and we would just ask people ensure that they're here before term starts on the 22nd September.

Thanks for asking! We don't have an exact date set but we hope to be able to start sending student ID numbers out to unconditional offer holders in the next month or so, and so you should hopefully be able to start booking your accommodation soon if you're unconditional. No one has them yet so don't worry about other people booking ahead of you at this stage!
There's a bit more information on booking in a post upthread but just let me know if you have any more questions: https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=7562385&p=100407392&page=1#post100407392
