Rowing/running at uni

Hi, I!m in year 12 and looking at uni options. I row (and run a bit on the side) at the moment and am keen to keep this up at uni. Does anyone have any info on what unis around the middle to top of BUCS rankings ask of athletes joining there squads (2ks, resumes etc) and how quick do you have to be going to get into decent boats? Also, similar info about athletics/running clubs would be great. Thanks!

Hi there!

Its great to hear you're interested in carrying on with your sport at uni.

Unis differ in terms of what they look for for sports squads but most with a strong sporty background will offer clubs at all levels. I would recommend you choosing your uni primarily on what course you would like to study and where is best suited for you.

However, if you are looking for somewhere strong in sport, then Bath might be a good option for you to consider. I know I may be biased here, but as a city Bath is safe, very beautiful with lots to do, we have one of the best industrial placement schemes for students in the country and the reputation for sport at anything from beginner to Team GB Olympic level is fantastic.

Bath's rowing club offers a programme of sport for people of all levels and fields teams to enter into BUCS events if this is something you'd like to be involved with. There are training opportunities on Wednesday afternoons, competitions throughout the year as well as an annual Varsity fixture which is super-fun 🙂 . Here is a bit more info on what the club involves.

There is also a similar provision for athletics. Our facilities at Bath include a full-sized athletics track as well as running tracks indoors and a huge sports field as well as professional coaching for a range of sports. Its definitely a good place to be if you're interested in sport so perhaps check out the website and see what you think? 🙂

I hope this is of some help! Wishing you the best of luck this year!

Top sports Unis are Bath, Loughborough and Birmingham - all have Team GB / Commonwealth Games training facilities

Hiya!

I recommend having a look at the BUCS ranking page here, to see the results from previous years. I'd start from there, and then find the specific university sports pages eg., "cardiff uni rowing club". You can get their contact from there and I'm sure they'd be able to answer specific questions about what they ask of athletes and things like that.
