maths/maths with econ or medicine

hey! I am a year 12 student currently studying maths, further maths, biology, chemistry and econ. I am undecided between studying maths/maths with econ at uni or medicine. If maths I would apply to oxford, imperial, warwick, ucl and lse and if medicine I would apply to cambridge, imperial, ucl, and a safety school. What course would have a better career projection?

Hi @charlie's_devil,

It is very hard to compare a maths degree and a medicine degree given they are very different. Both will lead you to a good career with medicine having an more obvious destination and maths being more versitile (a maths degree can lead to a career in finance, data analysis, insurance, logistics, and so much more). I would say that, of the two, a medicine degree would be more intensive and may be harder to get into. However, a matsh degree would have choice and freedom to detirmine your pathway. You should consider which subject you prefer the most and which you are going enjoy studying for 3-5 years. You may also want to look at the entry requirements and content of the courses at your desired universities to see if you are likely to and would want to get onto the course. I would also recommend going to a open day (when they come around) to see if you would like to spend time there. This could be especially useful at imperial and ucl, where you could potentially speak to people from the maths and medicine departments and have a better comparison.

Hope this provides some perspective for you

If you are considering these two different degrees then medicine isn't for you: you need to be 100 percent you want to do medicine as it is the dedication you have to have after the medical degree to do multiple years of training frequently moving jobs and likely locations on a regular basis
