Optometry 2025

Heyy,
I have a lot to say in here so please whoever got time hear me out! I am a current yr 13 student studying applied science (Technical Diploma) and sociology. I've always wanted to go into the field of Optometry and perhaps follow a career within this specific course at Uni. Most unis require around 114/120 ucas tariff points but because I was too eager to get into this course I've applied for both the normal course and foundation course. I've applied to City Uni of London (Both foundation and normal course), University of Hertfordshire (Both foundation and normal course) and for my 5th option I chose Anglia Ruskin. Unfortunately City and Herts both rejected for both of the courses that I have applied for. City said that I do not meet the entry requirements as they want at least a science based a level for the foundation course and I do Sociology as A level and Herts said that I do not meet the entry requirement for GCSES as I got a 4 (due to certain circumstances) in maths and they want at least a 5. I have tried countless time to call and email both Unis However nothing seems to change. I tried appealing myself and give an explanation even tho My ucas tariff points surpassed their requirements for the foundation course. Anglia Ruskin has offered me a place for Biomed which is something I'm not interested into doing. I find it quite unfair for City University to reject and to not even look at my circumstances as I have a cousin who got into the foundation course for optometry by literally studying English lit, politics and sociology so how are they rejecting me. Since I've heard back from all unis in the space of 15 days I couldn't change it into any unis outside London such as Plymouth. I emailed Herts but they seem to not take into account my situation. I thought about pharma but optometry is something I really wanna do. I don't know how I feel about a gap year and retaking a science based a level with a private tutor and if that would be worth it. I need help I'm stressing out soo much and is like I've lost hope. I'm not sure if any uni in London does clearing for optometry and if specifically City or Herts do clearing or if they get filled out very easily. I am just panicking a lot because this course was something I really wanted to do. Does any university do cleaning for pharma or opto? I also heard that Herts aren't very strict but I just don't understand how achieving a 4 compared to a 5 would cause so much issue. If there is anyone that could genuinely help me and give me some advice PLEASE LET ME KNOWW.

Optometry courses (the qualified ones that you need to be an optometrist i.e. MOptom) tend to be very academic with their entry requirements. In other words, at least 2 science (and or Maths, but not necessarily FM) A Levels are more or less expected. See: https://optical.org/en/education-and-cpd/education/what-to-study-and-where/

You can sometimes get away with doing Access to HE in science (with at least 2 of the following: 15 credits in biology, 15 in chemistry, and/or 15 in physics). However, you would need to check the entry requirements of each MOptom to be sure, since not all unis accept Access diplomas.
Should you do an Access Diploma, you can do them offline at your local adult college (recommended) or online. See the following to find your course: https://www.accesstohe.ac.uk/course-search
Do note, some colleges would only accept you for Access if you're at least 19 by the September that you start the course i.e. you might need to have a gap year between finishing college at 18 and doing the course. Also note, since you have done BTEC, etc. before you did your Access course, you might need to fund it yourself. However, you should check with the Advanced Learner's Loan department to see if you can get a loan for this instead - the exception is usually if you go to uni the year after you complete your Access course.

In terms of your GCSE grades: really consider resitting the ones you need. As far as I know, the policy for resitting GCSEs isn't as strict with MOptom degrees as they are with degrees in medicine, veterinary science, or dentistry. You should check the entry requirements of the individual degree to be sure they allow resitting though.
You typically can resit English Language and Maths at your local adult college. Since you have a 4, I am not entirely sure whether they would allow you to resit for free so check.
Failing the above, consider resitting GCSE subjects as a private candidate. Where possible, see if you can avoid needing to resubmit your coursework and NEA as this can be incredibly costly. If you can't, see if you can pick subjects where it's 100% exams. The exams generally aren't particularly expensive e.g. £100 or less each. You should check the exam boards' websites to see if there are any exam centres that would allow you to sit the exams with them.
