Help me decide my UCAS choices for Psychology!

My predicted grades are ABC with two sciences and English literature. I'm eligible for contextual offers at all.

So far I've applied for York - Psychology Bsc. I need to choose my other four asap obviously but just can't narrow it down!

What would you choose from these and why?:

Newcastle - psychology (likely offer via partners would be BBB)
Newcastle - cognitive science (likely offer via partners BCC)
Swansea - psychology (likely offer BBB-BBC)
UEA - cognitive psychology ( likely offer BBC)
Durham - Psychology with foundation ( CCC)

I have visited a TON of unis and these are the ones that tick all my boxes in terms of mental health support and access to training and facilities to my sport (I compete nationally). Newcastle is on there twice because although the cog sci course is new ( and the only one not BPS accredited ) I was very interested in the course content, the presentation at the open day was fascinating.

Hello @Ledel01 👋

It's amazing to see that you want to study psychology at university and keep competing nationally - congratulations on all of your hard work! Have you considered the University of Essex? 🤔🎓️

You could study Psychology as a BA or BSc, or BSc Psychology with Cognitive Neuroscience (all accredited by the British Psychological Society), have access to great facilities (such as the biggest BabyLab in the East of England), and we're top 30 in the UK for Psychology (THE World University Rankings 2024). 🔬🧠

The University of Essex is just outside of Colchester, less than one hour away from London on the train (with three stations near to campus). Our Students' Union is amazing, with over 165 societies to join, a library (open 24/7), gym and sports centre (free if you live on campus), cinema, two bars and a nightclub on campus. Students are supported by the Student Wellbeing and Inclusivity Service and we are now ranked 29th in the British Universities and Colleges Sport table. 🌟

Have a look at all of your options and choose what feels right for you. You've still got time, reach out if you have any questions and good luck. 😊🍀

Thanks for your reply, Essex isn't on my list but I appreciate you taking the time to respond.

They sound like solid Uni choices - and courses you want to do for all the right reasons.
Well done!

Thank you! Which one of the five shall I not apply to though as I’ve already applied to York?

Forget the Durham Foundation?

If your grades on Results Day are that low, then you could either pick something up in Clearing, or resit.

Hmm, I think its probably my equal favourite with York, I loved the city and beautiful landscapes when I visited and I'm not snobbish about doing a foundation year. I'm probably least sure about Swansea as I haven't visited it, and UEA, just because I didn't get such happy vibes as at the others. I'm also nervous that Newcastle wont give me an offer for psychology as its so popular and, well, my C prediction :frown:

Sporty unis are Loughborough and Bath - have you looked at them?

Hey, thanks for your input. Yes Ive visited both several times to compete and was impressed but unfortunately my predictions don't meet the requirements for their psychology courses and/or I don't meet their contextual offer criteria.

You can have an aspirational choice

?Exeter ABB contextual - accredited with good sport facilities and lovely campus.

Well I really loved Exeter, but with Psychology being so incredibly popular decided against it. There's people with AAA not getting offers so I think I’d be wasting a choice.
I actually need to drop an option, not think of more he he

Hi @Ledel01

Looks like you've done really well to narrow down your uni choices and visit unis! I've just graduated from UEA doing psychology BSc so I might be able to offer my views on the course and campus.

I really enjoyed the course, I did a four-year degree with a placement year. I will say they are very flexible if you change your mind about what course you want to do, for instance if you wanted to switch from cognitive psychology to just straight psychology. This is because typically, all psychology courses will follow the same structure in the first year! I also really enjoyed the Psychology of Mental Health module in my final year as it really explored how different organisations categorise mental health and what this can mean for the public.

The Sportpark is also amazing! There's an olympic sized swimming pool, an indoor climbing wall, a cafe, a gym... I could go on and on but I'm sure you've done your research! Please let me know if you have any questions! There's also lots of clubs and societies to join to meet other people who do your sport.

I've also had experience with their wellbeing and disability team and they've been fantastic, so supportive with monthly check-ins and reasonable adjustments for my assessments.

I think all your unis are great choices, but I will say I highly recommend choosing a BPS accredited course. I am not sure what you want to do in the future but anything clinical, forensic, etc... will require a BPS-accredited degree. You can read more about BPS accrediation here but it basically means that course is of a certain standard, so teaching in the first and some of the second year can look quite similar across courses. The Cog Sci course is likely very interesting because it deviates from the BPS curriculum.

If you have any more questions about UEA or want to discuss anything, let me know!

Best of luck,
UEA Rep Grace 🙂

I’m planning to study psychology as well, Swansea is my top choice and it ticked all my boxes and a friend of mine has visited Newcastle and I know people who got to UEA and Durham. Not sure if this is much help though sorry.

Thanks this is helpful to hear from someone who's studied psych at UEA. I did really like the fact that its easy to switch courses.

Update is that my top four are now
York
Newcastle
UEA
Durham (foundation)

I decided to drop the Cog sci at Newcastle as it would take me in a direction Im unsure about.

So I could stick with Swansea as my 5th or I'm now wondering if I should give Southampton a go. If I do get an offer it'll be ABB so a grade above my predicted.
So shall I go for it or stick with Swansea for the 5th?? Need to decide by tomorrow.

Have you visited Swansea? I think I would go with Southampton ahead of a Welsh uni.

I haven't, no. Its the only one I haven't visited yet but it looks great from what I've seen. I'm very interested why you say ‘welsh uni’ are you Welsh? Or do you have experience of welsh unis?

There is still a lot of anti-English feeling. Last time I visited Swasea I asked for directions and was, deliberately?, sent the wrong way. Graduation ceremony is double the length of most unis as it is all in both Welsh and English.

Ah ok lol. One of my parents is welsh and I have family there, nowhere near Swansea though. I'm mixed ethnicity and applying for Durham so a few welsh people not liking my English accent isn't gonna put me off.
