University of Reading student zero hours jobs

Hi, I am currently looking for a zero hours job that I can manage alongside my university studies at the university of reading. I'd like to be able to go home for the holidays hence a zero hours job that allows this would be great. Are there are companies in the area that students commonly get jobs at? I was thinking about hospitality or retail related ones.

Hi there!

I hope you're doing well, and thank you for your question about zero hours jobs.

This is really common at uni as lots of people don't want to commit to working in Reading over the holidays to allow them time to spend at home with their families.

I have personally exclusively worked for Campus Jobs throughout my four years at uni. Most of the jobs they offer are zero hour contracts as they are designed specifically for students. Lots of them allow you to pick up extra work when you don't have much on and take fewer shifts when you're busy. They also cap part-time work at 20 hours a week during term-time to ensure students are able to suitably juggle their studies alongside working.

I have held several positions such as Events team, Student Ambassador, Content Creator, Research Assistant, Focus Group Participant and Student Panellist. These all tend to be reasonably ad hoc, so a few hours a week at most. They also pay really reasonably which is always nice!

Some of my friends also have more consistent Campus Jobs such as bars and dining or receptionist work on campus. This still allows you to pick up work whenever you want to, but tends to be slightly more regular and consistent with the shifts available. You can read a bit more about Campus Jobs here.

I would also recommend having a look on jobs websites like Indeed for some jobs with zero hour contracts. These aren't likely to be quite as flexible as on campus work but there might be some more options on there.

I hope this has been helpful! Let us know if you have any more questions.
